Issue 91 of Soul Up North is out NOW!
ALL MY SALES ARE ALWAYS PLAY-GRADED
AND NOT JUST GIVEN A VISUAL ONCE-OVER
ALL THE ITEMS I AM SELLING COME FROM FORTY YEARS OF COLLECTING SOUL
THERE WILL BE SOME REAL GEMS, SO MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN
SOME OF MY LISTINGS CARRY 'BORROWED' SOUND CLIPS BENEATH THE TITLE
ALL MY ITEMS START WELL BELOW BOOK VALUE
SOME FROM AS LITTLE AS 50p
60s DETROIT GROUP NORTHERN SOUL
ORIGINAL U.S. PROMO
THE PLATTERS
ONLY A FEW GROUPS MANAGED TO ADJUST FROM DOO-WOP TO SOUL, BUT THE PLATTERS DID SO WITH SUCH MAJESTY THAT ITS HARD TO IMAGINE THAT THIS WAS THE SAME OUTFIT THAT HAD GIVEN US "ONLY YOU", "THE GREAT PRETENDER" AND "SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES"
THE LINE-UP HAD CHANGED, WITH SONNY TURNER AND NATE NELSON HANDLING MANY OF THE LEAD DUTIES, AND SANDRA DAWN PROVIDING THE FEMININE BEAUTY
IN 1967, DAVID LYNCH WAS REPLACED BY LARRY JOHNSON, SO THAT ONLY BASS SINGER HERB REED SURVIVED FROM THE 50s GROUP
"SWEET, SWEET LOVIN'"
HEAR HERE!!
A. THE VETERAN GROUP'S MOST UPTEMPO NORTHERN POUNDER; NON-STOP ON-THE-FOURS BEAT FOR JUST OVER TWO MINUTES, AND SONNY TURNER BELTING OUT THE LYRICS; ALTHOUGH THE LABEL STATES 'PRODUCTION COORDINATOR: RICHARD "POPCORN" WYLIE', "SWEET, SWEET LOVIN'" WAS ACTUALLY RECORDED AT GROOVE SOUND, A STUDIO IN NEW YORK CITY; WRITTEN BY TWO FINE SOUL ARTISTS IN THEIR OWN RIGHTS - VERNON HARRELL AND J.R. BAILEY - BOTH OF WHOM PASSED AWAY AT A CRIMINALLY YOUNG AGE (HARRELL WAS 56, WHILE BAILEY WAS ONLY 48; ARRANGED/CONDUCTED BY CHICAGO WIZARD SONNY SANDERS; BOTH SIDES ALSO GAINED A CONTEMPORARY BRITISH RELEASE THROUGH STATESIDE, ALTHOUGH MANY COLLECTORS PREFER THE 1971 REISSUE ON PYE INTERNATIONAL, BECAUSE IT PAIRED THE A-SIDE WITH THE OTHERWISE ALBUM-ONLY STOMPER "GOING BACK TO DETROIT"; THE TRACK GAVE IT'S NAME TO THE PLATTERS' FIFTH MUSICOR ALBUM IN 1968, A REISSUE OF WHICH I AM ALSO LISTING AT THE MO
b/w
"SONATA"
HEAR HERE!!
B. ANOTHER TRACK THAT LATER APPEARED ON THE "SWEET SWEET LOVIN'" ALBUM, "SONATA" SHOWS THE SIDE OF THE PLATTERS THAT MANY PEOPLE REMEMBER THEM FOR - LUSH HARMONY BALLADS, OF THE STYLE KNOWN LOOSELY AS DOO-WOP; THE MOST OBVIOUS FEATURE IS THE DEEP BASS INTRO OF HERB REED, WITH THE REMAINDER OF THE TRACK BEING HANDLED BY SONNY TURNER; "SONATA" WAS WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BUCK RAM, THE GROUP'S MENTOR, WHO WAS ALSO AMONG THE MOST PROLIFIC BMI SONG-WRITERS OF THE ERA - ALONGSIDE THE MUCH MORE OBVIOUS PAUL SIMON AND PAUL McCARTNEY; "SONATA" SAW A LATER MUSICOR REISSUE, AS THE FLIP TO "FEAR OF LOSING YOU"
