Tones on Tail was a musical  of  of the  group , along with art school friend, flatmate and "Bauhaus "  in 1982. The band's name is a reference to the way calibration tones were recorded on the "tail" of  tape. After the breakup of Bauhaus in 1983, they were joined by drummer . Their music was described by one critic as "doom-and-dance-pop." The band disbanded in 1984 shortly before Ash and Haskins went on to form .

In concert, the band sported all white. Their track "Go!" was one of the sample sources for 's "".  They did one short tour of the UK and North America.

The 1998 release Everything!, is a two- set of every track, remastered, plus a radio interview with Ash and Haskins.

Reception

Writing for , critic Ned Raggett said: "With their former band's generally gloomier shadows left behind, what Ash and Haskins draw from their time with Bauhaus is that group's melange of styles—their most underappreciated strength". Richard Williams of  said "Tones on Tail carries on with the traditional Bauhaus taste for the macabre, but charts new courses of twisting the pop thing." James Muretich of  wrote "From the ashes of Bauhaus has arisen a British trio that is turning into one of the most impressive and macabre dance bands around."

Licensing

"Go!" was used in the  episode "U4EA" (the song plays while Brandon and Emily are dancing at a downtown Los Angeles rave), and in a 2008 commercial by the Ford Motor Company for their Mercury Mariner. It was also used during the class reunion disco scene in the 1997 film , which starred , , and , as well as in the scene in 2003 film  where Michael and company pile into a truck inside which there is a party, driven by a minor character played by . Additionally, "Go!" was used in the trailer for the second season of  on .
