We Fucked a Flame into Being is the debut album from Warhaus, the artistic alter ego and solo recording project of Maarten Devoldere (one of acclaimed indie rock band Balthazar’s two frontmen). The title is a direct quote from the DH Lawrence novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover and is fitting for a collection of songs which explore the shadowy inscrutability of human encounters, revelling in all the decadence and intensity that life offers. These dark, sophisticated songs display a range of influences from Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave, to Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, but with Devoldere’s unmistakable drawl.
