On their debut album for Sub Pop, Canadian indie rockers the Constantines sharpened their songwriting and took several bold steps away from the more classic hardcore sound of their self-titled debut. SHINE A LIGHT rages with a righteous punk rock spirit, yet there's a remarkable use of space throughout. With near jazz-like interplay, an odd guitar line or whisper-to-a-scream vocal will suddenly pierce the often minimalist sonic landscapes of tracks such as "Nighttime Anytime" and "Insectivora."
That said, the Constantines almost reach the heights of the Who or the Clash in terms of pure rock thrills on the album's two most straightforward tracks: the punchy singalong "I'm On to You" and a soon-to-be anthem for a new generation, "Young Lions." The Constantines would go on to explore the balance between songwriting smarts and a punk-style freedom principle on their next album, TOURNAMENT OF HEARTS, but it is on SHINE A LIGHT that the band makes its first major creative strides forward.
