Wilhelm Backhaus - Piano
Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt/ Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major "Emperor"

(Decca SXL 2179 UK LP 1959)

This is an original UK Stereo pressing. It has a front laminated flipback sleeve which has an extremely thin spine. The "spine" text is on the rear sleeve next to the spine. The top & bottom flipbacks have a rounded circular die-cut area at the centre. The rear on the sleeve has a printing date on the bottom flipback (R.S. 5-60). This means that the sleeve was printed in May 1960. It comes with its original polythene-lined "FFSS" company inner sleeve.

The record is pressed on thick vinyl & has ED1 "wide band" Decca labels which are grooved also. They have the "Original Recordings By.." text on them. It has 1st press ZAL-4597-2E and ZAL-4598-2E matrix numbers.

Sleeve: There is some light to mild rubbing wear to the corner tips. There is some light to very mild ringwear. There is a 1.5 cm area of rubbing wear at the centre of the spine. There is some light or very mild foxing on a couple of area of the rear sleeve. VG+ condition.

Vinyl: There are some light or very mild sleeve rubs which can be seen under a strong light. VG++ condition. The labels are in excellent+ condition and show next to no spindle wear. The company inner sleeve is in VG+ condition. There is some light or mild ringwear' fading & creasing. There are no seam splits.

I have play tested this LP in its entirety & it plays VG overall & VG+ in some places. There is some light, mild or very mild crackle in the background. This is most noticeable in the quieter places. There are a few areas of more moderate crackle. This LP would definitely benefit from a professional clean. Most of the crackle, I believe, is due to deep down dirt in the grooves & not to groove wear. Visually the disc looks very nice & clean. It would, I believe play much better afterwards. However, as it stands, this is a bit of a crackly copy. So please be aware of this when bidding.

Traceable insurance is already included in the stated P&P price for this listing.

I have some other rare Stereo UK Classical LP's for sale. So please see my other auctions.

Discount is given on P&P for multiple purchases. I shall always weigh combined purchases to get a completely accurate price.  So please wait for the invoice to be sent before paying. I offer worldwide postage.

    >>  Grading Information All grading is very strict & adheres to 'Record Collector' specifications. However, I have fine tuned them & they are explained below. All vinyl is examined closely under a strong light & play tested.

MINT Condition = As good as a copy you would buy from a shop, immaculate!

NEAR MINT Condition = Very nearly mint just slightly under, maybe a couple of very, very light paper sleeve scuffs that can only be seen under strong light. SOME WOULD CLASS THIS AS MINT. This disc has been played a couple of times at most. Cover is virtually perfect - very minimal wear only.

EX Condition = A clean & tidy copy that shows virtually no defects. Maybe one or two light needle scuffs or light sleeve removal marks that can only be seen under strong light. There will be no scratches. Play will be near perfect with no distortion. Cover will be very nice with maybe very minimal creasing, ringwear or edgewear.

NEAR EX Condition = You can tell this record has been played a few times but it has been well cared for. There will be minor surface marks only; that barely detract from the sound quality. Cover may have slight creasing or ringwear. A very serviceable copy that you will be pleased with.

VG Condition = A well played but serviceable copy. There will be a few marks on the vinyl, but they won't be nasty scratches, just relatively light needle scuffs and sleeve removal marks, they will be noticeable but won't detract from play too much. Cover will show signs of storage/ ageing, e.g., creasing, slight folding, spinewear, ringwear or sticker tears. The record will not be trashed!!
>>  Postage Rates

AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT TO YOU VERY SOON AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS. PLEASE WAIT FOR THIS BEFORE PAYING.

Royal Mail have very recently increased their postage rates. So I have revised my postage costs to reflect their increases. (Please note that these prices include packaging costs too)

DISCOUNT WILL BE GIVEN ON POSTAGE FOR MULTIPLE ITEMS. SEE PRICES ABOVE.

All records will be sent in high quality vinyl mailers with at least two card stiffeners either side of the LP or 7". I use a cruciform box for larger orders (4-6 LPs). All parcels will be marked "Fragile" and dispatch time will generally be between 2-3 days after payment.

I will also remove the vinyl from the sleeve & place them in a re-sealable polythene sleeve. In order to prevent seam splits. Depending on the inner sleeve; I often remove the vinyl from the inner sleeve & place it in a separate plain paper, or polythene-lined, plain inner sleeve. I am very conscientious and careful when packaging your LP(s).

I consider my postage & packaging costs to be very transparent & very fair. Packaging costs will generally be between £0.80 to £1.50. I am not adding any further costs for handling, etc...

Sorry, I only accept Paypal, or money sent in a registered letter from overseas buyers.

If you are uncertain about any of the above, or just simply want some information regarding any item, please do not hesitate to contact me. I welcome any questions.

Remember to check out Lots of rare & quality vinyl! Most are UK 1st Pressings. It is quite likely that there will be more records by this artist, or records in a similar vein.
