BLACK SABBATH ‘THE ETERNAL IDOL’ VINYL LP. EXCELLENT (1987)

Vertigo Cat No VERH 51

You are bidding on a lovely vinyl LP of ‘The Eternal Idol’ as released by Black Sabbath in 1987.

This album outer sleeve shows minor signs of shelf wear, whilst the inner would be pristine except for some rust spotting. The vinyl is pristine and plays perfectly. I am only selling this item as I do not currently have a good quality record deck and have the album on CD.

Totally underrated, this was the thirteenth studio album from the band and the first to feature Tony Martin on vocals. Many true fans of the band know that the Tony Martin era was criminally overlooked at the time by critics and the music press. After years of turmoil and playing a game of musical chairs with various lead singers during the early '80s, Tony Iommi finally stumbled on Tony Martin, a dependable frontman, and in doing so initiating the original heavy metal band's long-awaited return to respectability -- if not chart-topping success. Tony Martin joined the often-interrupted sessions for what would become this release as the album was already I progress, stepping in for the shambolic Ray Gillen, and helped Iommi rescue an astonishingly solid long-player from the jaws of complete and utter chaos. As it turned out, Martin’s powerful, muscular voice -- though bearing more than a passing resemblance to former singer Ronnie James Dio -- was ultimately the perfect foil for full-bodied heavy metal anthems.  None of this would have been achieved without the much-missed Geoff Nicholls who embodied a third pillar of stability, by adding impeccable supporting keyboards throughout.

Such was the vocal prowess of Tony Martin, he became the second longest serving vocalist with the band, Sadly, Black Sabbath became a huge legal battle with former members refusing to play songs that they did not originally record, so bona fide classics like ‘The Shining’ soon faded from the live set list, when in reality they should have become a staple.

Of course, I should have mentioned, Tony Iommi remains as masterful and majestic as ever with his riffage.

With a playing times of around 43 minutes, the full track listing is:

The Shining

Ancient Warrior

Hard Life to Love

Glory Ride

Born to Lose

Nightmare

Scarlet Pimpernel

Lost Forever

Eternal Idol
