The final instalment of Numero Group’s comprehensive and loving reissue of Unwound’s catalogue sees the Washington group’s 1998 album, Challenge For A Civilised Society, and 2001’s Leaves Turn Inside You collected alongside singles, B-sides, unreleased tracks and demos in a beautifully presented four-disc box. Empire finds Unwound four albums into a career that had already seen them transform from a primal evocation of what may have happened if grunge looked to post-punk (rather than scuzzed-up radio rock) for inspiration, to a more considered – experimental, even – take on alt.rock. The first album in this collection is a rather spotty affair, suffused with dread, as if the band are suddenly experiencing a moment of self-awareness. Still, by most other group’s standards it would be a career stand-out. It’s Leaves Turn Inside You, though, on which Unwound’s legacy rests. A thrillingly diverse exploration of the possibilities of rock’n’roll, it’s a 75-minute long statement of intent that takes in influences as diverse as modern classical, free jazz and psych, while retaining the power and potency of the group’s earlier work. It’s a sprawling, weirdly enchanting beast of an album that deserves wider praise, and is recommended to fans of rock in all its guises.
