The fact that 1987's The Eyes of Horror EP is probably best remembered for having been produced by Joe Satriani (he was then guitarist Larry LaLonde's teacher) should pretty much tell you all you need to know about Possessed's third and final release. That's right, it wasn't mush to write home about, but, for the sake of sound reportage, suffice to say it represented, at best, a holding pattern from the one-time death metal pioneers' previous, severely underwhelming second effort, Beyond the Gates. If anything, the overall sound quality was somewhat improved here (go, Joe!), and so was the material (special kudos to "My Belief," the title track, and the suspiciously guitar-hero-intro'ed "Storm in My Mind") -- although that's not saying much in light of what had come before -- much less comparable to the triumph that was Possessed's first album, the seminal Seven Churches. And the band probably realized it, too, so when LaLonde subsequently split to join prog-funk-weirdos Primus, the remaining members of Possessed quietly went their separate ways. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
