The Aeronauts - Nine Extra Lives
description
Details
Things go wrong, things are lost, but we all know, with the last spark of punk in the fire, everything will be fine at some point. Olifr Maurmann and his aeronauts are back, they take us by the hand and explain again how this stressful life goes. Magnificently captivating, incredibly clever, devastatingly funny and ruthlessly honest, but never cynical and certainly never limp. This album is a miracle, an unexpected hug, a huge consolation.
It is 13 titles long, the extra life that Maurmann had in mind and yet no longer got: After two heart attacks, he waited four months in the hospital bed for a donor heart in autumn 2019. In January 2020, his weak heart gave out at the last moment. A shock that shook the German-speaking music world from Bern to Hamburg, after all Maurmann alias GUZ, self-proclaimed dumpling baron and Dirk von Lowtzow in rubber boots, with the Aeronauts, was the only Swiss band with a good position in the Hamburg school, soulmate with superpunk or Knarf Rellöm and the other village idiots who reinvented the big city, as he ironically wrote.
There is not much talk of death and heart on this extra album, rather it is bursting with life and the defiant will not to give up and to get up again and again. It is not for nothing that it hits like the debut album of a band that has bundled all youthful forces for their first masterpiece. Nothing about somehow tired, mature work, as it is always euphemistically called, but, after all, Maurmann was only 52, the promise of a powerful new beginning.
Now I know how it's done, he sings on the title track Neun Extraleben. Which is a joke, because he already knew how everything, 30 years of aeronaut band history alone testify to that. It should go on, in February 2019 the band retired to an alpine hut in Appenzellerland for a week and started working on a new album. They later met regularly in Maurmann's Startrack studio in Schaffhausen and made good progress until the boss had to go to the hospital.
