For many, the abiding image
of the late Robert Palmer is
that of the besuited smooth
operator familiar from the
heavy rotation videos of his
big 80s hits, Addicted To
Love and She Makes My Day.
It’s not a million miles removed from the man who
began his solo career with
these two albums a decade
earlier, though, in the
beginning, sartorial splendour
took a back seat to the
persuasive power of his
soulful voice.

After three albums with
Vinegar Joe, the band in
which the singer shared
vocal duties with Elkie
Brooks, Palmer was kept on
by Island and teamed with
members of Little Feat and The Meters for 1974’s
Sneakin’ Sally Through The
Alley. Laconic funk and R&B
are the order of the day,
best exemplified by the
two Allen Toussaint covers
(the title track and From
A Whisper To A Scream)
and Lowell George’s Sailin’
Shoes, though the slow-burn
tour de force is the selfpenned
12-minute closer
Through It All There’s You.
