Description
Original UK matt red & white Elektra label stereo press.
The debut album from The Doors recorded on four tracks between August to September 1966 and produced by Paul Rothschild & Bruce Botnick in Hollywood and released in the US in January 1967. The band was touring and appearing on TV in America for much of the first half of 1967 and after a slow start the album finally made number 2 in the USA in September, kept off the no. 1 slot by Sgt Pepper! The Mono release of the album was dropped in the following year and in the UK the release was hampered by problems with Elektra and Polydor arranging distribution, so it never sold well and did not make the UK charts.
This led to some early copies being sold with US sleeves, some with Polydor UK sleeves and a variety of different label designs (at least six or seven to date), on the initial orange & black label release from 1967 to 1968 and on the orange & silver label in 1969. All the initial releases and all those down to 1970 used the same matrix numbers and did not have mother stampers, only in 1971 did new master discs come into use with the Butterfly Elektra labels. Similarly, the original master tapes were always reused and not until the 1990's were new mixes made available, so the uncorrected speed errors on 'Light My Fire & Break On Through' are preserved on this third press!
This is the original 1970 issue with the UK manufactured Polydor laminated sleeve and matching EKS-74004 numbers, with the earliest A-1 B-1 (COL) matrices and -3 -4 stampers!
The fully laminated sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light corner wear & a little laminate rubbing and a couple of small creases on the front cover. The spine is intact and fully readable, the plain company inner is intact & dated 06/70, with some light foxing/creasing & in EX condition.
The record is in visually EX+ condition, with only a couple of faint sleeve removal hairlines and one or two light needle scuffs visible on each side. The labels are in EX+ condition, clean & bright with evidence of one or two faint spindle markings on each side.
The sound reproduction is EX+, still clear & precise throughout with no loud hiss or crackle & definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some brief background noise during the run in grooves.
Overall, just a really great, loud & clear listen.
The matrix nos. are; EKS-74014, A-1A (COL) 1 stamper -3, B-(A) stamper -4, This is one of the early copies of the 3rd pressing of the original 1967 UK stereo issue of this album!
