Description
Original UK Jam Records label stereo press.
Hawkwind was originally formed in London in 1969 by Dave Brock and John Harrison, who soon recruited Nick Turner, Terry Ollis, Huw Lloyd-Langton and Dik Mik. They managed to secure a recording contract via manager Douglas Smith and recorded their debut album in March/April 1970. Dick Taylor of the Pretty Things was drafted in to produce and even played with the band for a few gigs. The result was a album recorded live in the studio as a single free jam session, a continuous performance that was later edited down to create the individual tracks. It's original name was 'Sunshine Special' and remains Dave Brock's favourite album.
It was finally released in August 1970, initially with the blue Liberty labels, which were being phased out for the new black labels at the time (Cosmo's Factory was released in late September, but was issued with black labels). The black label versions were issued over the next couple of months and have at least four variant label designs, all of which are different from the blue versions!
This is the original issue with the black Liberty/UA labels, with the later A-2U B-2U matrices and 1-R 1-O stampers of the later 1st presses.
The E. J. Day Ltd matt gatefold sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light edge/corner wear and a little storage rubbing/creasing on the outer cover, with some creasing along the spine of the inner cover. The spine is intact, slightly worn and fully readable, the company inner is intact, but discoloured & in VG+ condition.
The record is in visually EX condition, with a few faint & wispy sleeve removal hairlines and a couple of small needle scuffs/marks visible on each side. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of only one or two faint spindle markings on each side.
The sound reproduction is EX, still clear & precise throughout with no loud pops or crackle & definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some brief, low background noise during the run in grooves.
Overall, a really great, clear and loud listen.
The matrix nos. are; LBS-83348, A-2U stamper 1-R, B-2U stamper 1-O. This is one of the early copies of the 2nd pressing of the original 1970 UK stereo issue of this album!
