Led Zeppelin IV A3/B4 1st Press w/Peter Grant credit & Inverted Feather
This genuine first pressing plays to an incredible standard that you so rarely find today. This is the holy grail for Led Zepp collectors as it has the Peter Grant credit on both labels and the inverted feather on S2. There is also no Superhype credit on the labels. This pressing either came with an A3/B3 or A3/B4 matrix and this particular one has the latter.
As detailed below the audio is just stunning and is practically 'as new' all the way through. The only 'interference' is two lights during the louder section towards the end of the classic 'Stairway To Heaven' but the rest is just amazing! The sonic quality on all tracks is just phenomenal - the clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is as good as anything I have ever listened to before and it has hardly been played based on the audio and the minimal spindle wear. There is a little vinyl flecking still on the S2 spindle hole which more or less confirms this theory.
I sold another one of these two months ago and I have to say this one is equally as good. This vinyl is visually stunning and you would be mistaken for thinking it was 'as new' it is that impressive. A true time warp archive classic.
The iconic cover is excellent condition with a little shelf wear but still very much retains its original shape and structure. The original paper lyric inner has a couple of the usual edge splits but is still very clean with no marking.

Visual grading
This is easily one of the finest Led Zepp IV vinyls I have ever seen! It glistens beautifully and still has that 'as new' jet-black immaculate glossy sheen that you see on new records not one that is over 50 years old, it really is a work of art! There are no scratches and S1 is absolutely stunning! I can only locate a handful of barely visible hairlines but you have to inspect it very closely in order to find them. S2 is also in fantastic condition with only one very small faint mark and just a couple more hairlines that are just a little more obvious, still faint though. I am being too critical perhaps because there is literally nothing that stands out and it is visually stunning in every regard. The run out grooves are pristine and there is only very minimal spindle wear on the red/plum labels which have incidentally retained their original deep colour so well. As stated the S2 label still has a little vinyl flecking around the spindle hole. A stunning example of this rare vinyl!
Play grading The intro on 'Black Dog' is near perfect with only a couple of very minor static sounds Plant's opening vocal has no 'background'. From then on it plays with stunning clarity with a power to match. The sonic quality could not be any stronger and every section plays with imperious quality. There are no ticks, clicks or pops and even the brief 'quieter' moments play with great clarity with only a couple of insignificant dust ticks. This is a STUNNING version and Page's solo towards the end is so clear and dynamic with no distortion at all, it is immense! Even the fade out has no 'background' and I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint- such is the quality. A sensational start!
Bonham's intro on 'Rock And Roll' is 'as new' and it continues in the same precise way with no intrusion. From start to finish it plays with impeccable power and precision like it has never been played before! It is an immaculate clarity of sound that really stands out and Plant's vocal is a fine example of that. I have never heard it sound so sharp and precise and the same applies to the thumping piano in the background. So often the piano is lost in the mix but this version is so clean it can be heard with perfect precision here. This obviously has to be turned up to max in order to hear Page in all his glory and I repeat there is no distortion. There is no 'muddiness' to the sound - no audio is 'lost' and it is Mint in every way.
The quiet build up intro on 'The Battle Of Evermore' plays beautifully with only a minor touch of barely audible static, it hardly deserves a mention. The opening vocal plays with perfect clarity and it continues in the same way with...no interference. The playback is so clean for a relatively quiet track and there are no ticks, clicks or pops and no background static either. I will grade as Mint- this time.
The classic 'Stairway To Heaven' has just one very quiet tick right at the start (very very quiet!) but the clarity is again stunning throughout this entire acoustic section! This is easily one of the finest intros I have ever heard and this is on a genuine first pressing! I cannot overstate just how unbelievably clean the playback is! STUNNING! The opening two verses would not be out of place on a 'new' vinyl such is clarity and I heard only 3/4 barely audible dust ticks. The 'It makes me wonder' section is just as impressive and following two verses play to the same 'high end' standard also. As Bonham comes in the audio still plays with the same incredible depth but there are two light clicks in the middle of the fifth verse - the only intrusion across the entire track. Verse six plays to perfection and Page's 'strumming' section has barely any of the distortion that you so often find and his solo then plays with a clarity and power that is off the chart! It plays with exceptional quality with no distortion and the 'high octane' section encompassing Plant's powerful vocal is as good as anything I have heard before. This entire section is so strong and dynamic and there is just no distortion at all, how rare is that! I honestly cannot believe the sonic quality on offer here. The final quiet vocal plays beautifully with no intrusion and truth be told this would be Mint- but for the two lights clicks. However, I still think Near Mint is deserved when you consider how impressive the overall sonic quality. It is a stunning version.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
'Misty Mountain Hop' plays with great clarity from the get go and this standard is maintained as it continues. As per S1 the power and depth of the audio is superb and there is no intrusion of any kind. This is another example of a vinyl that has been so well preserved down the years. 'High octane' tracks such as this that are over 50+ years old often suffer from some audio deterioration but that is not the case here. Mint-
'Four Sticks' has a couple of barely noticeable ticks on the intro but they hardly warrant a mention, I'm often too 'complete' in my descriptions! This track plays with sublime definition throughout with no sign of any actual interference and the 'keyboard' sections in particular are stunning, the sonic quality can again correctly be described 'as new'. The long fade out is perfect and this is again worthy of a Mint- grade.
The intro on 'Going To California' has barely static and what you can detect is so quiet and totally non-intrusive, just a handful of mega light background ticks. Plant's opening vocal is so clean and it progresses in exactly the same way. Needless to say this plays with stunning quality with no ticks, clicks or pops and being such a quiet track and I could only pick up the odd very light static sound. There is nothing that detracts from the overall quality so I will grade the intro as Near Mint but the remainder is easily Mint- in my opinion. The clarity is amazing for a vinyl of this age and on such a rare first pressing also.
The percussive intro on 'When The Levee Breaks' is 'as new' and the rest of this intro is just as strong. What a start! The audio is so strong and the harmonica sections have never played with such clarity. Plant's opening vocal is flawless and and the more you get into this classic the more you are impressed by the audio. So often it is affected by a fair amount of inner groove distortion but that is not the case here. This has to be one of the strongest versions I have ever heard and you do not need to turn the volume down here! If there is any distortion it is so minimal and is just what you would expect to find on a vinyl from this era. The audio has such depth and power I cannot stress enough just how good it is! This is a stunning Mint- finish to the album.
In summary...well it does not get much better than this! This is without doubt one of the finest red/plum Led Zepp IVs I have ever played and there cannot be many first pressings that play with such outstanding quality. Yes there are a couple of light clicks during 'Stairway To Heaven' but they are hardly intrusive and the rest of the track is just fantastic! The clarity and definition of the audio on both sides is of a standard you so rarely find today and I am confident any die-hard collector will agree with my assessment. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find a red/plum press play this well let alone one with the Peter Grant credit and the inverted feather on S2! This is audio of the highest calibre and based on this, the visual quality and that there is only very minimal spindle wear it obvious this vinyl has only been very lightly played. This is how it has pretty much maintained all of its original sonic quality. It is a STUNNING first press for sure! This is an album that delivers on every level and is a archive time-warp classic I am confident in saying.
The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve The gatefold is in excellent condition with only a couple of areas of 'wear'. This cover is notoriously flimsy but this one has withstood the test of time very well overall. Only the bottom edge of the back cover has some rubbing that I would call obvious and the spine also has some wear on the edge next to the front cover. All of the corners are in excellent shape though with just a little more wear bottom right and the opening edge has only very minimal handling wear which is to be expected. The front cover is very clean although you can see a very faint sticker mark top right which also has a very small circular white scuff mark next to it. The back cover is in lovely condition with only a faint mark on the top edge. The inside of the gatefold is pristine with no marking and the inner spine has no damage either. A very respectable version overall.
The original inner is very clean with no marking and has the usual bottom edge split but...only one side split! The side which does has a split is nearly 9cms long but does have a couple of small tears on it which you can see on the lyric side. The bottom edge split is only 7cms long but is a 'clean' split as it were. The flipbacks are super clean and are firmly attached to the sleeve apart from one small section top left. Not perfect but it has no marking or creasing and is a very good example in my opinion. Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable // B & W 684 Speakers
