I recently purchased a stunning Pink Floyd collection where all the records and covers have been so well preserved by the previous owner. I am selling the majority of them during this auction.
Pink Floyd : Animals A2/B2 1st Press
This first pressing may well be the finest example I have ever heard and has only been played a handful of times at most. The clarity, depth and power of the audio is STUNNING and there are no clicks, pops or static. S1 can correctly be graded 'as new' the clarity is just exceptional and the end section has none of the distortion that you so often find. S2 is not far behind with only a very small number of insignificant light ticks on 'Sheep'. As described below this side is often affected by various sound issues but that is not the case here and I truly believe it is the strongest S2 I have ever heard.
The vinyl is visually stunning and this is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic. I cannot remember when I last heard or saw one as pristine as this. It has the wow factor!
The cover is also in beautiful condition with barely any wear and so rarely found as immaculate as this. The lyric inner is also in superb shape with only very minimal wear. A stunning 'package'.
SHVL 815 // A - 2U / B - 2U // AR 3 / GRR 2

The audio on S2 is Mint(-) (T2 Near Mint briefly during one instrumental section)

Visual grading
The vinyl is in fantastic condition and still has that 'as new' jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches. It really does look 'shop fresh. I can only find a couple of very small faint hairlines on S1 and the grooves on both sides are just so incredibly clean. The labels are unmarked and have only very minimal spindle wear. This is as good as it gets!
Play grading 'Pigs On The Wing (Part One)' plays beautifully with a clarity that can hardly be faulted. There are a couple of very light ticks on the intro but they obviously do not impact on the quality of the audio. There are no clicks or pops and no background static either. It is rare for the opening grooves on any pressing to play so clearly let alone a first pressing that is now 45 years old. This is easily a Mint- start to the album.
The quiet build up on 'Dogs' is 'as new' as is the remainder of the acoustic intro. The opening two verses are of the same standard and Gilmour's first solo is 'as new' with no interference whatsoever. The third verse is just as impressive and it continues to plays with imperious quality through the next instrumental section. So far I cannot believe the clarity on offer here and it honestly plays like it has never been on a turntable! There is literally no 'background' and you can hear every subtle nuance of the audio - each note is just so clean and precise and I'm noticing things that I have never heard before. The next two verses play with STUNNING precision with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks and the next instrumental section is outstanding. The majority is of course very quiet and yet the clarity cannot be faulted and it more than shows why we listen to vinyl - clarity, depth and warmth such as this cannot be replicated by any other medium. This really is audio of the highest calibre and I am pleased to say this standard maintained during the final two verses and Gilmour's final solo is equally as strong. The final section is so often affected by inner groove distortion and yet this has to be the 'cleanest' finale I have heard in many a year and I am confident in saying there is no distortion at all. The playback is stunning and I truly believe this 17 minute classic is deserving of a Mint grade. What a version!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This has to be most stunning S2 I have ever listened to! As many Floyd audiophiles will know this side generally does not play as well as S1 although the reasons for this are unclear, perhaps it's something to do with the pressing process. The long intro on 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)' plays with genuine precision and no intrusion and the opening two verses are of the same 'high end' standard. The long instrumental section is nigh on perfect with only a small number of very light ticks - they are so quiet and even 'ticks' is perhaps too strong a word for it. Towards the end of this section there are three ticks that are a little more obvious but in no way can they be classified as clicks, they are not loud. The final verse is faultless and Gilmour's closing solo is just as impressive with no distortion and the long fade out has no 'background' either. I would grade the vast majority as Mint and Near Mint during that one instrumental passage. The 'background' here is so minimal and overall this is easily the 'cleanest' version that I have heard as it is so often affected by persistent static etc. Not here the clarity throughout is stunning.
The long intro on 'Sheep' is superb! Remember this section is so quiet and the yet the clarity is exceptional! There is no background static and only a couple of very minor dust ticks, something you find on a new vinyl let alone one of this advanced age! Never heard better. The opening vocal section is 'as new' and the instrumental section that follows is as good as it was when first pressed! Again it's the clarity of sound that really stands out and nowhere is that more obvious than during the 'Lord's Prayer' section. A couple of very light ticks at most the playback is again so clean and precise as is the final vocal. Gilmour's closing section plays with great power and definition and barely any of the distortion that you so often find. The 'sheep' end piece has no 'background' at all. Overall Mint- is again fully justified.
'Pigs On The Wing (Part 2)' closes the album with outstanding clarity once more. With only two barely audible ticks this is as close to perfect as is possible. I am sure many would grade as Mint but I will say Mint- just to err on the side of caution :-)
In summary I have to say this is without question one of the finest first pressings I have heard if not the best! The sonic cannot be faulted and this is clearly a record that has been so well preserved. I have graded S1 as Mint- but in a way it is S2 that is even more impressive because as I said it so often plays with a fair amount of static etc. That is certainly not the case here - the playback is so clean, the original sonic quality is still there for sure where each note plays with perfect precision. There are no clicks, pops or static on either side and this easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE pressing. There cannot be many A2/B2 pressings like this around today and of course it comes complete with a stunning cover and lyric inner! This is an immaculate first press that would add to any collection. The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
This stunning cover is more or less pristine and at first glance you would think it had just been purchased 'brand new' from the record store! The top edges have only a couple of tiny specks and the bottom edges for once are perfect. The wide spine is in superb condition with only one barely visible speck and barely any wear on the corners. The right corners are also in lovely condition with no obvious wear and the opening edge is immaculate. The front cover has retained its original colour and remains in beautiful condition with no marking just one very small and faint crease line near the top edge. The back cover is equally as good if not better and the inside of the gatefold is perfect with no marking or fading. The cover has also retained its original shape and strength which can only mean it has hardly been handled down the years, it is a fantastic example of its kind.
The lyric inner (with rounded corners) has no bottom edge splits (how rare is that!) and has just has a handful of very faint crease lines next to the edge on S1 and just one on each side on S2. This really is so minimal. The top left corner just has one very small edge splits but it is a continuation of the rounded edge so you hardly notice it anyway. It is superb condition overall and rarely found as clean as this.
