Description
This is the original UK stereo issue of their debut 1967 album, with the large 'E' orange & black Elektra third version labels with the Polydor Records credits and the earliest A-(A) B-1A (Col) matrices, with A-14 stamper of the first presses.
The debut album from The Doors was recorded on four tracks between August to September 1966 and produced by Paul Rothschild & Bruce Botnick in Hollywood and released in the US in January 1967. The band was touring for much of the first half of 1967 and after a slow start the album finally made number 2 in the USA in September, kept off the no.1 slot by Sgt Pepper! The Mono release of the album was dropped early in the following year and in the UK the release was delayed by problems with Elektra and Polydor arranging distribution, so it never sold well and did not make the UK charts.
This led to some early UK copies being sold with matt US sleeves, some with laminated Polydor UK sleeves (at least two versions) and a variety of different label designs (at least six or seven to date), on the initial orange & black label release from 1967 to 1968 and then on the orange & silver label in 1969, and finally the red & white labels from 1970. All the initial releases and all those down to 1970 used the same matrix numbers and many early copies did not have mother stampers, only in 1971 did new master discs come into use with the new Butterfly Elektra labels.
The fully laminated sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light corner wear & a little laminate rubbing and a couple of small creases on the front cover. The spine is intact, with small areas of laminate lifting and fully readable, the plain company inner is intact, with some light foxing/creasing & in VG+ condition.
The record is in visually EX condition, with few faint sleeve removal hairlines and one or two light needle scuffs visible on each side, but there is one small needle mark on track 3 side 1. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of a couple of faint spindle markings on each side and a name in ink on side 1.
The sound reproduction is EX, still clear & precise throughout with no loud hiss or crackle & definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some brief background noise during the run in grooves and a couple of low clicks caused by the needle mark on side 1.
Overall, still a really great, loud & clear listen.
The matrix nos. are; EKS-74014, A-(A) stamper A-14, B-1A (Col) stamper ?, This is one of the early copies of the first pressing of the original 1967 UK stereo issue of this album!
