Hawkwind : Warriors On The Edge Of Time A-1U / B-1U 1st Press 1975

This first pressing plays to the highest standard possible with literally no interference.  As stated below I found only a couple of very light ticks on S2 and I do mean light!  The clarity of sound is incredible and the power, depth and resonance of the audio equally so.  I cannot emphasise enough just how immaculate the playback is!  It goes without saying that is a FINAL UPGRADE classic.  If S2 is superb then S1 is just phenomenal!  Not surprisingly the vinyl is visually stunning with only some insignificant faint hairlines and this is clearly a record that has only had a handful of spins.  Wow!

The iconic fold-out cover is one of the best you are every likely to see with barely any wear, a tiny corner crease top right that's about it.  The inner sleeve is also in excellent with just one crease line.

As this is a first press is has the A1U/B1U matrix and 'The Demented Man' is listed as 'The Demented King' on the S1 label credits.  'Magnu' is also listed as 'Magno' on the S2 label.

Visual description

The vinyl is in superb condition with a pristine glossy sheen and there are no marks or scratches.  There are only a few very faint sleeve removal hairlines and small number of tiny faint 'specks' but they obviously have no affect on the audio.  The UAR labels are almost perfect with no marking and barely any spindle wear.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Assault & Battery (Part 1)' is 'as new' with no 'background' and the opening vocal section is of the same high end standard.  This is a superb start to this album, I cannot fault the audio in any way, the sonic quality is just STUNNING!  Each note is so clean and precise and I am 100% confident in grading this as Mint there is no need for a minus here!

'The Golden Void (Part 2)' keeps up this fine start and plays with a clarity, depth and power that is out of this world, no pun intended!  From the first note to the last including the fade out there is no intrusion on the audio and Mint is again deserved.  The sonic 'landscape' here is so impressive it demands to be played loud!  As per the first track I cannot emphasise enough just how unbelievably good the audio is!

'The Wizard Blew His Horn' again plays to a standard that belies the age of the album.  With only a couple of barely audible dust ticks (no need to mention them really) the playback is 'as new'.  A quieter track of course and yet the clarity is equal to that of an un-played record.  Mint

The segue into 'Opa-Loka' is perfect and this instrumental plays with impeccable quality throughout.  I don't know why Lemmy didn't like it I think it's quite good!  A little repetitive perhaps but then Hawkwind specialised in that driving powerful style and the depth of the audio here is again so strong.  The final 'ocean' sequence is flawless and once again Mint is the only grade I can give.

The intro on 'The Demented Man' plays beautifully without any interference and the clarity of sound is again the real stand out here.  There is not one single dust tick let alone anything more.  If I'm being super critical there is just a touch of inner groove distortion on the vocal but so so minor and totally non-intrusive.  I perhaps should not downgrade as a result as it is the final track on the side and Mint- is easily a fair reflection of the audio.  A STUNNING side of music!

The opening grooves on any record will often play with some 'background', that is the nature of vinyl, but the atmospheric intro on 'Magnu' does not pay heed to that!  It is 'as new' with not one dust tick even and from then on plays with incredible clarity, power and resonance and for fear of sounding repetitive it just could not play any better.  No need to elaborate this is Mint from start to finish.

'Standing At The Edge' plays with sublime clarity etc with just one mega light tick in the middle section, more like a dust tick really.  It is so quiet I am very likely doing myself a disservice by even putting it here!  I will however grade as Mint- just to be on the safe side.

'Spiral Galaxy 28948' plays with unrivalled quality with...no interference.  Not one dust tick, no static just pure Mint audio throughout.

The segue into 'Warriors' is just as impressive and then 'plays' so clearly with just one light tick half way through.  Mint-

'Dying Seas' keeps up the good work and plays with faultless precision throughout with no interference of any kind.  Once more the clarity and depth of the audio could not be any more impressive but I will grade as Mint- as there is just one light tick on the fade out.

'Kings Of Speed' plays with immense power and depth and...no interference.  There are no negatives, no inner groove distortion even, and it completes this album with Mint quality audio.

In summary this first pressing plays to the highest standard possible in my opinion and easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE time-warp classic.  There is basically no intrusion on the audio - ok a couple of very light ticks on S2 but that is not interference!  I grade my albums with complete honesty and it would not be in my interests (or yours!) to 'over-grade'.  The clarity, depth and power on offer here is on a par with an un-played record and that is no exaggeration.  The sonic quality is just STUNNING and in conjunction with the superb fold-out cover this would be a great addition to any high end collection.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

 The limited edition fold-out cover is in fantastic condition and it is difficult to find fault, there is certainly no obvious wear.  The cover has retained its original shape and structure so well and has clearly not been handled very much.  The edges are so clean and the wide spine is just as impressive.  The only corners with any wear is the top right one which has a minor crease and the corresponding one on the back which is even smaller.  The opening edges have no handling wear and the front cover is beautifully clean with only a couple of 'specks' top left and the small crease as stated.  The back cover is even better (!) and both sides have kept their original colouring perfectly.  The fold-out section is immaculate with no marking and no wear on any of the edges.  A stunning example!

The die-cut inner is in excellent condition with no side splits or marking and just has one faint crease line across most of the 'picture' side.  No idea how it got there, I suspect during the manufacturing stage.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
