"Gloria / My Generation" : 12" VINYL + BAG / SLEEVE

"Gloria" is a rock song written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison, and originally recorded by Morrison's band, hem,  in 1964. 

"My Generation" is written by Pete Townsend. and originally Recorded by The Who, in 1965

The songs both became garage rock staples and a part of many rock bands' repertoires

Patti Smith recorded "Gloria" for her album Horses. 

Based on the Van Morrison tune, the lyrics had been adapted from an early poem, 'Oath'.

Smith's band had started to play the song live and had merged it with the poem by 1974, so the song contained half of Smith's own words.

For the recording of her debut album, Smith and her band recorded the song live and, after mixing, chose it as the album's opener.
The spoken intro begins, "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine," being the statement of the album.

A fixture of the mid-1970s underground rock music scene in New York. Smith signed to Arista in 1975, and recorded her first album Horses with her band at Electric Lady Studios in August and September of that year.

She enlisted former Velvet Underground member John Cale to produce the album.

Smith's music was informed by the minimalist aesthetic of the Punk Rock genre, then in its formative years. 

William Ruhlmann of AllMusic cited Lenny Kaye's rudimentary guitar playing, the "anarchic spirit" of Smith's vocals, and the emotionally charged nature of Smith's lyrics as being representative of punk and wrote that, "Smith sang with the delirious release of an inspired amateur", emphasizing "honest passion" over technical proficiency, and the band "proudly flaunted a garage rock aesthetic.     

Smith's vocals on the album alternate between being sung and spoken, an approach that, "challenged the very notion of a demarcation" between the two forms.
