The nicest thing you can do for your stylus and your ears.

There have been so few vinyl LPs produced over the last 5 years that you should never pass up the opportunity to upgrade your collection. They're each very limited in their pressings and disappear with extraordinary quickness from the vinyl market. This causes prices to skyrocket because once they are gone, they are gone forever! Don't second-guess yourself with this chance to upgrade your collection because before you know it, the opportunity will have passed forever. The nicest thing you can do for your stylus and your ears. The ultimate record -- the way music was meant to be heard.

In early 1968, the band-mates of Blood, Sweat and Tears staged a palace coup, asking the band's founder and leader Al Kooper to leave the band, freeing them to set a new direction for their music. Not content with the horn-based rock of CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN (their first album) their new direction would include more overt use of jazz. Also in search of a lead vocalist more polished than Kooper, they found David Clayton Thomas.

In early 1969 the results were released in the form of an album titled simply BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS but to place it in historical context, it is known as "BS&T 2". The album was phenomenally successful, putting the group on the popular culture map in a way CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN had not, launching three hit singles, and winning multiple Grammys. Thomas shines as a vocalist, with a very different personality than Kooper. Kooper was passionate and playful, while Thomas is earnest and emphatic.

Blood Sweat and Tears, at least at the beginning, was a force to be reckoned with. Best known for their great horn section, this was actually a very tight band which had a big chart run in the early 1970's. This is their second LP, but their first with David Clayton Thomas as lead vocalist. Three huge and timeless hits, the galloping "And When I Die," the gospelish "Spinning Wheel" and the love song "You've Made Me So Very Happy." But Clayton Thomas turns in a fine vocal effort on Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child," and the band sounds great on the Traffic cover "Smiling Phases.

" The lengthy instrumental "The Blues" gives the band room to blow, and there's an enjoyable 25-second blast of "Sunshine Of Your Love" midway through the song. Not a weak track on the set. The final tracks are live, lengthier and jazzier versions of "More and More" and "Smiling Phases." A truly great LP. Strongly recommended, as is their debut CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN with Al Kooper in charge of vocals and the group itself. Pick up these two LP's, and that's all the BS&T you need.
