Blood Sweat & Tears/ SELF TITLES PRESSING FROM COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS ISSUE KCS 9720 WITH GATEFOLD JACKET

In early 1968, the band-mates of Blood, Sweat and Tears staged a palace coup, asking the band's founder and leader Al Kooper to leave the band, freeing them to set a new direction for their music. Not content with the horn-based rock of CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN (their first album) their new direction would include more overt use of jazz. Also in search of a lead vocalist more polished than Kooper, they found David Clayton Thomas.

In early 1969 the results were released in the form of an album titled simply BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS but to place it in historical context, it is known as "BS&T 2". The album was phenomenally successful, putting the group on the popular culture map in a way CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN had not, launching three hit singles, and winning multiple Grammys. Thomas shines as a vocalist, with a very different personality than Kooper. Kooper was passionate and playful, while Thomas is earnest and emphatic.

Blood Sweat and Tears, at least at the beginning, was a force to be reckoned with. Best known for their great horn section, this was actually a very tight band which had a big chart run in the early 1970's. This is their second LP, but their first with David Clayton Thomas as lead vocalist. Three huge and timeless hits, the galloping "And When I Die," the gospelish "Spinning Wheel" and the love song "You've Made Me So Very Happy." But Clayton Thomas turns in a fine vocal effort on Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child," and the band sounds great on the Traffic cover "Smiling Phases.

" The lengthy instrumental "The Blues" gives the band room to blow, and there's an enjoyable 25-second blast of "Sunshine Of Your Love" midway through the song. Not a weak track on the set. The final tracks are live, lengthier and jazzier versions of "More and More" and "Smiling Phases." A truly great LP. Strongly recommended, as is their debut CHILD IS FATHER TO THE MAN with Al Kooper in charge of vocals and the group itself. Pick up these two LP's, and that's all the BS&T you need.

All songs written by Tom Petty except "A Woman In Love" and "You Can Still Change Your Mind" (Tom Petty/Mike Campbell).
This is where Petty's Dylan influence begins to rear its head. He made his name as an all-American, Byrds-inspired rock & roller, but on HARD PROMISES Petty began to explore a more reflective style, leaning on the softer side of his folk-rock roots. This is no NEBRASKA-there are plenty of spirited rockers and classy pop tunes-but Petty does sound like he's been spending some time with BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME. There are sharply observed character studies of hard-luck and no-luck guys ("Something Big," "Nightwatchman"), urgent power-pop declarations of romantic desperation ("A Thing About You") and even some light-hearted socio-cultural observations ("King's Road"). HARD PROMISES is Petty's first step towards the eclecticism that would mark his later work, and it's easily his most underrated album

Although the opening track, "Shout," takes on the theme of catharsis that dominated THE HURTING two years earlier, the progression evident from that debut to SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR is manifest in every other facet. While many of the band's synth-pop peers continued to develop along a linear route, Tears For Fears vaulted into the potentially insipid world of '80s MOR.
Curt Smith sings on the radio-friendly "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," but Roland Orzabal's stronger voice takes center-stage for much of the album, including the spirited single "Mother's Talk" and a falsetto on the stadium-sized "Head Over Heels." "The Working Hour" is the perfect realization of the new sound: a smooth six-minute arrangement of saxophone, piano, and guitar that's marked by a restrained sense of drama. SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR is an excellent album and, shading Simple Minds' ONCE UPON A TIME, arguably the finest example of epic '80s pop. The 1998 remastered edition includes seven bonus tracks.

Boston/Third Stage*, MCA RECORDS 1986 GATEFOLD JACKET MCA-6188 1ST EDITION ISSUE

Out of Print FACTORY SEALED Analog LP with small cutout on jacket

analog vinyl pressing - the way music was meant to be heard. Out of Print forever!!

In the days one-album-a-year contract with music label was pretty common, absence of 8 years could mean the band is dead. Even if the band managed to restart, are there market enough to boost the sales of the album? Boston with this third album in 1986 did such miracle like a phoenix from the ashes. Also this title is one of my all-time top favarite albums.

The album despite the fact it produced three huge hits including Amanda which became first #1 single for the band, is a concept album describing the third huge leap in your life stage. So the core track is three-parted THE LAUNCH with very progressive approach, rare for the music during 80s. The rest are carefully chosen to fit the very theme of the album.

AMANDA opening and the band's biggest hit also has reprises in the album such as MY DESTINATION or partly HOLLYANNA the last track. WE'RE READY which became the second biggest hit from the album works as a prelude to the opus THE LAUNCH. THE LAUNCH is the instrumental which provides the very reason you buy this album and listen to the album as a whole work. COOL THE ENGINES set the tone back to pop-oriented side of the album while A NEW WORLD resides as a last stand for the pompous rock the symbol of 70s progressive rock. TO BE A MAN, I THINK I LIKE IT and CAN'T CHA SAY again invites you to the mellower yet dynamic pop rock the trademark sound of BOSTON. HOLLYANN is the variation of AMANDA in opening part yet closes the album with ethreal chorus

Robert Cray/Strong Persuader*, 1986 POLYGRAM RECORDS 1ST EDITION 830-568-1-M-1 ISSUE

Cray's commercial breakthrough. The single 'Smokin' Gun" spearheaded yet another blues revival. This album is a strong collection of blues and R&B-based songs steeped in the tradition of Bobby Bland, 0. V. Wright, Stax Records, and guitar stylings of equal parts Steve Cropper and Albert Collins. The songs are thematically linked-all deal with cheating and its ramifications-and give Cray an anguished, contemporary persona.

Stinging urban blues by way of Texas and Memphis distinguish Robert Cray's major-label debut, which followed three strong independent releases. Here he fleshes out his sound with bursts of brassy Southern soul courtesy of the , but keeps his pungent, steely guitar solos out front in an engaging dialogue with his plaintive vocals. Released in 1986, Strong Persuader signaled that Cray, as a writer--like his contemporary --had something to say about his interior life beyond the usual blues man's laments, an approach that pays homage to the music's rich traditions while suggesting new areas of inquiry.

Tracks include: . Smoking Gun 2. I Guess I Showed Her 3. Right Next Door (Because Of Me) 4. Nothin' But A Woman 5. Still Around 6. More Than I Can Stand 7. Foul Play 8. I Wonder 9. Fantasized 10. New Blood
