Following 2010's well-received 200 gram vinyl edition of In The Court Of The Crimson King, DGM and Panegyric are proud to present the second in a series of King Crimson high quality vinyl reissues with the release of In the Wake Of Poseidon. The album’s return to the 12” vinyl format is newly cut from masters approved by Robert Fripp. Manufactured on 200 gram super-heavyweight vinyl and housed in a reprint of the original stunning gatefold sleeve, this edition also contains bonus MP3 codes giving access to a download of a transfer of an original 1970 pressing (in this case Robert Fripp’s personal file copy.)

King Crimson spent 1970 as a studio band recording a single "Catfood" and the two albums In the Wake of Poseidon and Lizard. "Catfood" was released in March, earning the band an appearance on British BBC TV flagship music show Top of the Pops. In The Wake of Poseidon followed in May. While McDonald and Giles had announced their intention to leave in December of 1969 and Greg Lake would depart in April of 1970, Giles and Lake appeared on the single and album with Peter Giles (formerly of Giles, Giles & Fripp) and incoming members Keith Tippett, Mel Collins and Gordon Haskell alongside Fripp and Sinfield. As a result, the album shares some similarities in approach and sound to their debut, In the Court of the Crimson King and has been a firm favorite among fans of the band since its initial release.

Though working with a transitional lineup the album sounds remarkably cohesive. Like the debut album, In The Wake Of Poseidon was self produced and displayed an increased confidence in the use of the recording studio. The breadth of material recorded is even broader than the debut. The short "Peace" appears in 3 different settings bookending the album’s longer tracks. One of the band’s prettiest ballads "Cadence & Cascade" leads into the powerful title track, while the album version of "Catfood" is followed by "The Devil’s Triangle," an ambitious sound collage that seems to owe more to contemporary classical and free jazz roots than any form of rock music. The short burst of “In the Court of the Crimson King” in the final part of the track eerily anticipates modern sampling techniques.

Upon release, In The Wake Of Poseidon reached #4 on the UK album charts, one position higher than their debut and the highest chart placing the band enjoyed in Britain.

"Lizard" - King Crimson's third studio album & second recording of 1970, was, like its predecessor "In the Wake of Poseidon", the product of a studio band. It was also the first Crimson album for which Robert Fripp provided all of the music. Remarkably self contained & sounding somewhat atypical for a King Crimson album - even by the standards of a band that rarely sounded similar from album to album, "Lizard" is an often overlooked & under appreciated gem from their early years. Certainly at the time of release, anyone expecting an extension of the soundscapes introduced & explored on the band's earlier two albums was in for a surprise.

As this lineup never toured, very little of the material was performed live & "Lizard" remained a product of the studio environment & the musicians who performed on it. "Lizard" remains a fascinating, intriguing album - an album only a band called King Crimson could make - even if it was a very different King Crimson to that which had gone before or would come after.

Starless And Bible Black is the eighth in a series of audiophile King Crimson vinyl reissues and completes the availability of the band's studio output from 1969/74 on 200 gram vinyl editions. Newly cut from masters approved by Robert Fripp, this super-heavyweight vinyl re-issue is housed in a reprint of the original gatefold sleeve. The first run of this edition contains a bonus limited time MP3 codes giving access to a download of a transfer of an original 1975 pressing.

Much of this 1974 album was recorded live but was edited and blended with studio material. In 1973, percussionist Jamie Muir left the band and the band's drummer, Bill Bruford, took on the duties of percussion. 

With the line-up change and touring pressures, King Crimson were short of newly written material to record for this album. Having increased their level of onstage improvisation while touring, they used new compositions performed in concert for this 1974 released album, in some cases blending the live recordings with studio recordings.

What this double LP release does do is include the brilliant, full version of "Starless" which in later compilations was edited by Fripp to omit the fantastic instrumental section featuring former Crimsonian Ian MacDonald. And without 'Schizoid', no compilation is complete. One star docked for the inclusions of "Moonchild" and "Trio" - pointless. Otherwise, a good summation of the band from the powerful first album right up to the Seventies Swan Song of "Red".

However, the story continues, picking up in the 80's and still being written as of 2011, at least officially. Stay tuned!

KING CRIMSON BEAT JAPAN OBI 28MM 01 80 PRESSING - IN MINT CONDITION 

An unfairly lamented album, "Beat" had the incredible misfortune of being the followup to one of the truly great records of its era. Tension abounded as the band sought new directions, and while stories of Fripp storming out of the studio at one point abound, through all this, the most difficult of the three 80s Crimson albums was born.

Named "Beat" as it took its inspiration from the beat poets, nothing shows this quite as clearly as "Neal and Jack and Me"-- an overt reference to Neal Cassidy and Jack Kerouac, filled with a driving beat, guitar pyrotechnics, and a great half shouted vocal from Belew, wrapped in interlocking guitars, its clear things have changed. This is about it for interlocking guitars-- there's a couple funky songs, with driving sort of beats, the instrumental "Sartori in Tangiers" and the frantic paced and crazed "Neurotica", which features a great break that takes the pace down before popping back up in intensity.

This one has no less than three ballads, two of which succeed and one of which ("Two Hands") is pretty much throwaway in my book. Hoewever, "Heartbeat" is a great love song, far and away the most straightforward the band has ever done-- it is however responsible for the opinion that Belew was putting a pop spin on the band, and I suspect if they did it over again, this one may not have made it. "Waiting Man" however is brilliant, featuring syncopated rhythms, a wonderful vocal from Belew, may be the best track on the album.

The album closes on a bizarre note, leaning towards the future in a way-- "The Howler", with its twisted guitars and the instrumental and brutal "Requiem". Full of angst ridden guitars and darkness, this one feels older, timeless in a way, full of the sort of darkness Crimson has been known for over the years-- almost out of place on this one, but one of the great moments of the '80s Crimson.

Its not as good as "Discipline", but "Beat" is a unique and interesting record. Definitely worth checking out. Track Listings Disc: 1   1. Neal And Jack And Me
