Mercury MG 20164 mono vinyl LP (1957)    Gilberto and the Musicabana Orchestra  Cha Cha Cha

Who is Gilberto? The liners claim he wrote Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," as well as "Tropicana" and "Tin Tin Deo." Evidently he was an electrical engineer who studied music as a hobby, and eventually he became an arranger and composer of note. The dozen tunes on Cha Cha Cha are credited to Mario Turner, however (perhaps his first trumpet, as was to Gillespie). So much for liner notes from circa-1957 Mercury. The recording is remarkable for getting the conga down well, and at the high end, the trumpets blare more than sufficiently. The second side is stronger, and indeed the whole album is rather progressive, loud, and even daring for the label and year. On a couple of tracks the band even may be said to cook. Compare to Xavier Cugat's lively, pre-1958 records for Mercury. ~ Tony Wilds, Rov
