Recorded on the heels of their power house smashes Santana's Caravanserai and The Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds Of Fire (FRM 31996), this amazing album even tore up the pop music charts and has been a jazz fusion staple ever since.
The album consisted of five tracks, several of them with extended timings which gave the two experts room to jam and free form their creative artistry to new levels. With new readings of the traditional Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord, as well as two John Coltrane interpretations A Love Supreme and Naima, Santana and McLaughlin truly delivered the goods with this timeless audiophile masterpiece!
The other players on this fine release include the Santana band's notables Michael Shrieve, Doug Rauch, and Armando Peraza, as well as jazz legend Larry Young on organ, and future jazz fusion superstars Billy Cobham and Jan Hammer from The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Wow!

Santana III is an album of lasts. It was the last album recorded with the original Woodstock-line up and the last to hit #1 in the Billboard charts until 1999's Supernatural. But there are also a number of important firsts on this album; Coke Escovedo joins in for the first time on percussion, as does Neal Schon (Journey) - a mere seventeen when they recorded the album - on guitar.
Santana III is seen by many as the band's commercial and creative highpoint. The band sounds darker, more raw, and more eager with the doubling up on guitar of Schon's rock'n'roll sensibilities and Santana's ecstatic high notes and soulful fills. Escovedo's and Chepito's percussion is as fast as it is furious, and the minimal production adds greatly to the timeless appeal of this album.

Ten time Grammy winner Santana returns with an album two decades in the making!
Shape Shifter is Carlos Santana's 36th album, and the first for his new label, Starfaith Records. The 13-song set is an instrumental tour de force featuring tracks spanning from the late 1990's to the present. It's powered throughout by Carlos' instantly recognizable virtuoso lead guitar and the Santana Band's world-class musicianship (only one song features vocals from Santana's lead vocalists Andy Vargas and Tony Lindsay).
Shape Shifter comprises mostly original compositions that Carlos has been stashing away for such an instrumental project-long awaited by fans — and he conceived the album's sequence as thoughtfully as its track selection. The songs flow together as the magical sustain of Carlos' guitar — and the spirit behind every note — makes music that breaks through all cultural and language barriers, the music of Santana.
The title track opens the album, beginning as a mellow acoustic groove, with Carlos channeling Native American spirits through chanting. The track builds to soaring heights-in addition to Carlos' driving lead, the song features Dennis Chambers on drums, Chester Thompson on keyboards, and Benny Rietveld on bass (they are the musical foundation on many of the tracks).
Other highlights include a mid-tempo cover of Toure Kunda's "Dom"; "Angelica Faith," which Carlos co-wrote with Thompson, is a signature Santana ballad in the tradition of "Samba Pa Ti" and "Europa." With "Mr. Szabo," Carlos pays homage to Gabor Szabo, whose music he brought to the fore in 1970, when he fused the Hungarian jazz guitarist and composer's "Gypsy Queen" with Peter Green's "Black Magic Woman" on Abraxas.
Shape Shifter closes with two songs that are collaborations between Carlos and his son, musician Salvador Santana — who plays piano on both-including the rousing "Canela." The final track, "Ah, Sweet Dancer," is a song Carlos first heard in a taxicab in Germany — he tracked it down in a local record store and began performing it regularly on tour. The recording features only soulful solos from father and son, offering elegant closure to Shape Shifter.
Since Santana emerged from the San Francisco Bay Area music scene in the 1960s, the group has sold more than 100 million records, reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Santana has won 10 Grammys, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999's Supernatural. Carlos Santana is No. 20 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time."

On three spellbinding and transportive new songs, Carlos Santana takes listeners inside a magical and deeply personal experience he had when he visited the Louvre Museum in Paris, France and set his eyes on Leonardo da Vinci�s beguiling masterpiece. The experience of seeing the Mona Lisa for the first time came flooding back to Santana months later, when he awoke from a dream with the lyrics to what would become the songs "In Search of Mona Lisa" and "Do You Remember Me" fully formed in his mind. "It was the first time that I ever woke up and lyrics were there in a tangible way," he reveals. "I could just grab them and write the songs."
On "Do You Remember Me", Carlos begins the song with passionate melodies and an invitation to dance. Once the band kicks in with a graceful Afro-Cuban groove (courtesy of wife Cindy Blackman Santana on drums, with Karl Perazzo on congas, timbales and percussion), Santana opens up on a full five minutes of some of his most gorgeous soloing yet � his lead lines are stinging, teasing, crying and sensuous � before singers Andy Vargas and Ray Greene take over. The EP's title track sets an entirely different mood. Santana had shown his lyrics for "In Search of Mona Lisa" to producer Narada Michael Walden, who suggested a Bo Diddley-esque rhythm. "I wasn't expecting that, but I immediately liked the idea," Santana says. With Walden rocking a rave-up drumbeat (he also overdubbed bass and keyboards), Santana lets loose with biting, wah-drenched call-and-response phrases with singer Cornell "CC" Carter before he takes flight on an impassioned extended guitar solo.
While "In Search of Mona Lisa" was being recorded, Cindy suggested doing something more symphonic and bringing in bass master Ron Carter. "That's all I needed to hear," Santana enthuses. "I was like, 'Oh, my God. Of course!'" The resulting track, "Lovers From Another Time", unfolds much like the painting that inspired the music itself, with the dual drumming of Cindy and Walden mixing with Carter's elegant basslines to create a living and breathing canvas on which Santana splashes vibrant six-string colors and textures.

It focuses on the too-often-underappreciated, yet creatively fertile period following Santana's 1998 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the massive success of 1999's Supernatural.
In the wake of Supernatural, Santana released a series of remarkable recordings, among them 2003's Shaman, 2005's All That I Am and 2014's Corazón, that stand with the best that Carlos, or his band, have ever made. Many of these songs and performances were overlooked at the time of their release and are presented anew on Splendiferous as essential musical elements in the Santana canon.
