In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Achtung Baby, U2 releases this Limited Edition Deluxe Box set including the original album on two 180g Black Vinyl LPs along with remixes, B sides and more on two Translucent Blue Vinyl LPs.
Achtung Baby was the 7th studio album by the iconic European rock group. After taking a hit by critics of their 1988 Rattle and Hum release, U2 shifted their musical direction to incorporate alternative rock, industrial, and electronic dance music influences into their sound. The group began recording Achtung Baby in Berlin's Hansa Studios in October of 1990 during the German reunification. The sessions were plagued with conflict while the band argued over the direction and quality of material. Finally, the group made a breakthrough with the improvised writing of the song "One". Morale improved when they returned to Dublin in 1991 and completed most of the recordings.
Twenty years ago, Bono described Achtung Baby as “the sound of four men chopping down The Joshua Tree” while Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote that “stripped-down and defying its old formulas, U2 has given itself a fighting chance for the 1990's.” The album won a Grammy® Award for Best Rock Performance and became one of the most significant records of the nineties and of U2’s career.
Recorded over six months at Hansa Studio in Berlin and Windmill Lane in Dublin, Achtung Baby is U2’s seventh studio album. Produced by longtime U2 collaborators, Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno with Steve Lillywhite, Achtung Baby was engineered by Flood and led by “The Fly.” The album spawned four other singles: “Mysterious Ways,” “One,” “Even Better Than The Real Thing” and “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses.”
The Achtung Baby archives have unearthed some previously unreleased songs from the recording sessions. With a raft of unreleased material, remixes and b-sides discovered, a full album of demo and early versions of the final 1991 tracklisting has also been revealed.
"After fostering a dour public image for years, U2 visibly loosened up on Achtung Baby, cracking jokes and even letting themselves be photographed in color. "It's a con, in a way," Bono admitted to Rolling Stone in 1992. "We call it Achtung Baby, grinning up our sleeves in all the photography. But it's probably the heaviest record we've ever made." Recorded in Berlin with Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, the album has lots of uncertainty, irony and distortion. It also has one of the most beautiful songs U2 ever recorded: "One," a ballad in which Bono wonders whether individuality also means eternal loneliness and comes down on the side of hope." - Rolling Stone

"On U2's fifth full album, the band immerses itself in the mythology of the United States, particularly the wide-open spaces and possibilities of the Western frontier, while guitarist the Edge exploits the poetic echo of digital delay, drowning his trademark arpeggios in rippling tremolo." -
The year 2007 marked the 20th anniversary of The Joshua Tree, the album which saw U2 become "Rock's Hottest Ticket". U2's biggest selling album to date, entered the US album charts at No. 7 and reached No. 1 three weeks later. It was U2's first album to reach No. 1 in the United States. Ireland's premier pop/rock band, U2, burst onto the scene in the early eighties and were dominant through the early nineties! War features such U2 classics as: Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day and Two Hearts Beat As One. A piece of '80s nostalgia.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day are easily two of the era's best songs... and they have never sounded better than they do here. On the whole, the album sports solid imaging and a wide deep soundstage..." - Andy Downing, The Absolute Sound, November 2008, Issue 186
"U2 were on the cusp of becoming one of the Eighties' most important groups when War came out. It's the band's most overtly political album, with songs about Poland's Solidarity movement ("New Year's Day") and Irish unrest ("Sunday Bloody Sunday") charged with explosive, passionate guitar rock." -
"'New Year's Day' lifted U2 out of the rock underground for good. As he often did, Bono made up his lyrics on the spot. 'We improvise, and the things that came out, I let them come out,' he said. 'I must have been thinking about Lech Walesa being interned. Then, when we'd recorded the song, they announced that martial law would be lifted in Poland on New Year's Day. Incredible.'" - Rolling Stone
"This rallying cry set to a military beat was inspired by two Sunday massacres in the ongoing civil war between Irish Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The band changed the song’s opening line from 'Don’t talk to me about the rights of the IRA' to 'I can’t believe the news today' out of fear that its plea for peace would be misconstrued." - Rolling Stone

"Boy" is the debut album from Irish rock band U2, originally released in 1980. Common themes among the album's songs are the dreams and frustrations of adolescence.
"... Bono frequently sounds like he's singing on the edge of an expansive abyss. Such dynamics shine on the sharp LP, which sports a soundstage wide enough to suit the band's growing ambition..." - Andy Downing, The Absolute Sound, November 2008, Issue 186
"Too ingenuous for punk, too unironic for New Wave, U2 arrived on Boy as big-time dreamers with the ambition to back it up. The Dublin foursome boasted Bono's arena-ready voice and Dave "the Edge" Evans' echoey, effects-laden guitar, as well as anthemic songs such as the club favorite "I Will Follow. -

Under a Blood Red Sky captures U2 on the brink of becoming the world's most significant live band. It was originally released in 1983 but still sounds fresh and exhilarating 25 years later.
Following the critically acclaimed War, which was released earlier in the same year and helped transform U2 into arena rock stars, Under a Blood Red Sky features material from U2's first three albums. A thrilling rendition of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is the centerpiece of the record, and it is delivered here in outstanding fashion, with unsurpassed fire and passion.
Many of these renditions are considerably tougher and less textured than their studio counterparts, but the band manages to draw on the energy from the crowd to deliver timeless performances. U2's reputation as the world's greatest live act, due in no small part to the sweeping success of Under a Blood Red Sky, would not be put to question for four more years, when The Joshua Tree won them their first Grammy Award and indisputably established them as simply the world's greatest rock band.
Rolling Stone hailed Under a Blood Red Sky as "one of the 50 moments that changed rock and roll." It remains as relevant today as a quarter century ago, always inferential of a global backdrop of war and violence, and always the pride of any rock and roll collection.

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" - Rated 388/500!
Universal Music and Island Records release this remastered LP to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this landmark album.
The fourth studio album by U2 was originally released in 1984. More ambient than the hard-hitting War album, The Unforgettable Fire showed the most change in direction at the time. The album contains tributes to Martin Luther King, Jr. and Elvis Presley and contains the hit "Pride (In the Name of Love). This was the first collaborative effort for Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.
"The War album in 1983 signaled the maturation of U2 as artists, but this (album) was the real creative breakthrough." - Robert Hilburn / LA Times / 2004
"The chords came from a 1983 soundcheck in Hawaii; the lyrics about Martin Luther King Jr. were inspired by an exhibit at Chicago's Peace Museum. With backing vocals by Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde (credited as Mrs. Christine Kerr; she was married to Jim Kerr of Simple Minds at the time), the result was the band's first Top 40 hit." - Rolling Stone
