One of three Donald Byrd albums from 1967 (the end of his hard bop period), this recording features the trumpeter/leader with altoist Sonny Red, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Billy Higgins. The six tunes (five of which are originals by Byrd or Red) are all quite obscure and to one extent or another quite explorative. One can sense that Byrd wanted to break through the boundaries and rules of hard bop but had not yet decided on his future directions. The music does swing and highlights include "West of the Pecos" and "Beale Street"; Byrd and Red in particular are in excellent form throughout the date.

DONALD BYRD/BLACK BYRD (LP) - Dr. Donald Byrd's deeply rooted jazz background never stopped him from constantly pushing jazz forward, opening the minds of his listeners in the process. Produced by Larry Mizell in 1973, Black Byrd is filled with beautiful music that captures his passion for sound. The sophisticated, uptempo instrumentals are funky and danceable, but also extremely smooth. Byrd's impeccable trumpet meshes perfectly with the African-influenced beats and rhythms.

1. Flight Time 2. Black Byrd 3. Love's So Far Away 4. Mr. Thomas - Donald Byrd, Jordan, Warren 5. Sky High 6. Slop Jar Blues 7. Where Are We Going? - Donald Byrd, Gordon, L.

While Miles Davis was making dark, brooding, introspective electric jazz,(which I love with all my heart,) Donald Byrd decided to investigate the other end of the spectrum.

This music is light and joyous funk, with tight vocal arrngements and a fantastic session band. Byrd took the same vocal ideas he used on New Perspective, and applied them to Sly Stone grooves. This coctail resulted in sleek but subtinative music. Sweet, fat licks that you bite into like a chocolate cherry. Commercial? Yes. Top 40 material, absolutely. Right up there on 70s radio with Barry White and Steely Dan. Not bad company, right?

Music you can listen to any time of day. Perfect.

DONALD BYRD/STREET LADY (LP)

This on vinyl..is one of my favorite Blue Note albums.
The music is very dated 70's blaxploitation, which happens to be one of my most favorite sounds. Plenty of flute and wah wah guitars. The vibe here is the ghetto in late afternoon when the street ladies start walking the beat. Actually this album is a loosely formed concept album based on a prostitute. This really isn't jazz - perhaps jazzy R&B or funk would be a better description. If you enjoy the background music in Curtis Mayfield and Bobby Womack cuts - you'll feel right at home with this one

1. Lansana's Priestess 2. Miss Kane 3. Sister Love 4. Street Lady - Donald Byrd, Mizell, Fonce 5. Witch Hunt 6. Woman of the World - Donald Byrd, Gordon, L.
