He played with John Coltrane, invented Spiritual Jazz and is in a way the figurehead for the new activity and reinvigoration of Jazz happening now. London based Sam Shepherd, , while studying for his doctorate in neuroscience, relaxed by making electronic dance music in the analog recording studio at his university. He became very successful in the electronic dance world and is seen as one of the leading members of next level of dance music along with Caribou and Four Tet. Add to that the LSO, the London Symphony Orchestra! It’s a special and unique project that Luaka Bop spent five years trying to bring in to fruition. We started working on this back in 2015, we often thought it would never see the light of day. We had many crazy meals around LA and Europe, entailing a lot of chicken and waffles breakfasts with Pharoah at Roscoes in LA and strange cul de sacs involving vans and redwoods and snakes. Then finally, we did ten days in an LA studio together last summer and an added day at Air Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra earlier this Covid summer, as crazy as that may seem. We think it’s going to be one of the best albums of the year. Sam feels it’s his best album ever. It’s Pharoah's first in 15 years and definitely his best for a long time. Not to oversell it.
