In 1958, Bob Bogle and Don Wilson formed the nucleus of the original music group, The Ventures. The duo was joined a few years later by Nokie Edwards to record "Walk, Don't Run". The song hit Billboard's Singles Chart on July 18, 1960 and peaked at #2. The rest, as they say, is history. The band became one of the most popular and biggest selling acts of the 1960s, and was prolific during the 60's in terms of touring and recording, particularly albums.

Since that spectacular beginning, The Ventures - later joined by Mel Taylor, then Gerry McGee, and more recently Bob Spalding and Leon Taylor - have gone on to help define a frequently overlooked branch of rock and roll music - Instrumental Rock. The band is credited by countless guitar legends as being a favorite or an influence. The Ventures’ style and their music have, from day one, been unique and groundbreaking.

Walk Don't Run went to #2 on the charts in July, 1960. It was the first hit for The Ventures. The song was said to define a whole new instrumental music genre, that would lead to the surf guitar craze a few years later. In response to a question about the greatest guitar solos in guitar history, Joe Walsh recalls, “I don't really know if it's a solo or not, but I'd have to say that 'Walk, Don't Run' by The Ventures changed an awful lot of guitar players' lives. It was one of the foundational instrumentals. It made instrumentals okay to do... It had been done before with Duane Eddy, but with The Ventures, America discovered the vibrato bar. I didn't even play guitar at the time, but I loved Walk, Don't Run. I was just 13 when that came out in '60, and my mom was making me practice a stupid metal clarinet for orchestra. I borrowed a guitar just to learn how to play that lead part."

A key feature of the album, The Ventures, was the iconic cover photo. Not only were The Ventures dressed alike, defining the proper appearance of an early sixties combo, but guitar players and fans were fascinated by the sight of the Fender instruments; a Jazz Master, a Stratocaster, and a Precision Bass. Joe Walsh mentioned this in his praise of the song, Walk Don't Run. This album cover itself contributed to the growing influence of The Ventures in 1961 and the birth of guitar bands. In addition to Perfidia, this album also contained the group's third straight Top 40 chart single, Ram-Bunk-Shush, which first charted in January 1961.

Planned for release as The Ventures third album and numbered accordingly, Dolton 8006, Another Smash was actually released as the second set and charted second. It followed the Walk Don't Run album and was a second straight album chart top 40 entry. The marquee cuts, in addition to Lullaby of the Leaves, are Ghost Riders In The Sky (Don Wilson lead), Wheels, Bulldog, Rawhide, Meet Mr. Callahan, Last Date, and Beyond The Sea. The band also pays homage to one of their influences, Chet Atkins, with a fine version of Trambone. There is anecdotal evidence that Carole King arranged the string background on Josie.

"The fourth studio album from the Ventures, 1961's Colorful Ventures was the first in a long line of releases the band built around album title themes. Here the theme is colors, and so listeners get such songs as 'Blue Moon,' 'Yellow Jacket,' Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White,' and so on... The album featured more of the group's recognizable instrumental rock & roll, surf rock, and country twang." - Rovi, allmusic

NEXT KING STRINGS AUDIOPHILE LP WITH John Lee Hooker, WITH TWO TRACKS BY Albert King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and more!

180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI

Selected from the crown jewels of the rich King-Federal-DeLuxe discography, King Strings features rocking, socking guitar instrumentals from the Cincinnati-based family of labels cut between 1949 and 1962, programmed for power! Fashioned as a vintage King LP from the era and containing a killer line-up of the biggest talents the stable of labels offered, this is the historic various artists collection that should have been issued circa 1962.

King was central to the underlying creative flow in R&B during the era, and the recordings here show the depth of style and synergy that the label routinely captured on vinyl. From the proto-funk groove of Hooker's "Stomp Boogie" (under the pseudonym Texas Slim) to two cuts of Baker magic captured in Paris over a decade later, and including key cuts from Freddy King, Albert King, Johnny "Guitar" Watson and many others in between, you'll individually hear a variety of instruments, tones and techniques, but together the clear, common artistry of the players' sovereign ability, sequenced like a long, climactic solo — this is the sound of some of the most heralded talent of the guitar generation! Includes a rich, detailed insert with rare photos and extensive liner notes by Colin Escott. Join six-string soul royalty for a showcase from the company that called itself The King of Them All!

If ever there was a "band that launched a thousand bands," it would be the Ventures. Founded in Tacoma, Washington in 1958, their guitar-based instrumental sound would prove hugely influential, inspiring countless followers to pick up a guitar, bass or set of drumsticks and try to emulate their heroes. As these musical neophytes would soon learn, it wasn't as easy as it initially appeared. The Ventures were masters of tone and technique, deftly arranging their instruments in a seamless approach that was instantly recognizable. Because they were an instrumental group, their songs needed no translation, which resulted in a huge worldwide following. While many rock bands have claimed to be "big in Japan" over the years, the Ventures were the country's first rock superstars and they maintain a devoted worldwide following to this day. With over 100 million records sold, they are the best-selling instrumental group of all time.

The Ventures music associated with their surf sound although BUT The Ventures were never really a 'surf' band. They started out before the gendre came into vogue and extended into surf music during its popularity and, in true Ventures' style, became masters of the sound. The fact that many cover songs they did (Pipeline, Telstar, Out Of Limits, etc.) became definitive versions over the originals is vivid proof of their amazing musical abilities. Anything another band could do, they could do better!  I would definitely recommend this LP to anyone hooked on the Ventures sound as, in my opinion, their 'Surfing' album was one of their best in great sounding stereo. A worthwhile purchase for any Ventures fan or instrumental fan.

You should never pass up the opportunity to upgrade your collection. They're each very limited in their pressings and disappear with extraordinary quickness from the vinyl market. This causes prices to skyrocket because once they are gone, they are gone forever! Don't second-guess yourself with this chance to upgrade your collection because before you know it, the opportunity will have passed forever.
