1962 Roscoe Holcomb & Wade Ward Folk / Old Time Folkways LP (The Music of)
Roscoe Holcomb and Wade Word – Roscoe Holcomb and Wade Ward – “The Music of Roscoe Holcomb and Wade Ward (Folkways 2363). Excellent 1962 release on this label. This album presents two musicians whose experiences are similar—both play banjo, usually locally at community social functions, and come from farming backgrounds—but whose playing styles are noticeably different. Holcomb (from Daisy, Kentucky) plays wilder music, while Ward (from Independence, Virginia) has developed a smoother style. Includes 10 cuts by Holcomb on vocal and banjo or guitar: “Moonshiner”; “On Top of Old Smoky”; “Little Grey Mule”; “Little Birdie”; “Graveyard Blues”; “Man of Constant Sorrow”; “The Rising Sun”; “Trouble in Mind”; “Hills of Mexico”; and “True Love” and 16 cuts by Ward or vocal and banjo or fiddle: “Peachbottom Creek”; “Uncle Eef Got a Coon”; “Mississippi Sawyer”; “Sourwood Mountain”; “Cumberland Gap”; “Old Jimmy Sutton”; “New River Train”; “Lone Prairie”; “Little Sadie”; “Mississippi Sawyer”; “Arkansas Traveler”; “Half Shaved”; “Old Reuben”; “Sally Ann”; “Cluck Old Hen”; and “Waterbound.” No booklet. Record is in VG+ condition and the cover in M- condition.
