The Ventures' guitar-driven instrumental sound was the genesis of the "surf-music" genre. The height of their popularity was in the 1960s. They have sold more than 110 million albums during the course of their long career and, at one point, had five albums in the US Billboard Top 100 at the same time.

Before you can say 'Book 'em Dano, "Hawaii Five-0" stayed on the charts for 14 weeks as a single and peaked at No. 4. It was the biggest TV theme hit single for the decade of the 1960s and is one of the most recognizable TV themes of all time.

The album of the same name charted for 24 weeks and peaked at No. 11. It was The Ventures third Gold Album.

Although "Hawaii 5-0" was the biggest television theme hit of the 1960s and became a true surf anthem, the Hawaii 5-0 album was not oriented toward either television themes or surf music. Rather, it was a return to the complete current hits package following two albums with slightly different concepts; The Horse and Underground Fire. Among the interesting cuts on Hawaii 5-0, in addition to the title cut, are "Loving Things," "Classics IV Medley," "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In," "Games People Play (featuring a Dobro lead)," and a version of Theme From A Summer Place," which was culled from the album and became The Ventures' last 1960's chart single.
