Daly Wilson Big Band
Live! at the cellblockOriginal OZ LP released in 1970 on the Orange & Black Parlophone Label. Cat: SCXO7979.
Over the next several months we have the pleasure of listing a spectacular vinyl collection of over 6000 LP's. This collection consisting of mostly Jazz but also Blues, Folk ,Rock, Soundtracks and Classical was kept in amazing condition. Most of the records were played once, transferred to tape for listening and then stored away in cliplock sealed bags in specially made cupboards. The overall condition of this collection is sublime to say the least and whatever items I list as Near Mint you can be assured that it was probaly only ever played once!! Over the last few weeks you may have noticed some of the lovely jazz & rock titles I have listed, these are just the tip of the iceberg here. I hope you enjoy seeing these listings as much as I have in offering them.
When the Daly-Wilson Big Band kicked off in 1968 they did so with the intention of knocking down barriers between different types of music. They were the first band to take jazz/rock and big band jazz to audiences around Australia. Warren Daly was one of the creative forces behind the group and as the bands drummer he was also literally a driving force for them as well. His career began in the late '50s, firstly with The Ramblers and then The Steeds.
These outfits played the R&B and rock sounds of the day but Warren and the boys could all read music and play virtually anything and this kept them one of the most in demand backing bands of the day. In the mid '60s he took the chance to tour the US, first with the Kirby Stone Four and then later with Glenn Miller's Band and Si Zetner. The experience playing with big bands like these proved invaluable when he decided in 1968 to move back to Australia and try putting his own outfit together. The Daly-Wilson Big Band quickly carved a reputation for themselves as one of the tightest and exhilarating bands of their day. They recorded a handful of bold and often funky LPs and eventually took their sound to the world after securing corporate sponsorship in 1973.
