Funk/Rare Groove
Few bands out there are more worthy of belonging in the canon of appropriately-named acts than The Funkees. Formed in the aftermath of the Biafran Civil War in Nigeria to raise spirits, the band swiftly conquered the dancefloors of Nigeria and were soon off to London to achieve similar feats at Ronnie Scott's and other such legendary venues. Originally released in 1976, Now I'm A Man was the band's second LP and captured the Nigerian troupe three years into their London-era pomp, delivering a vibrant eight-track salvo of psychedelically-charged music that tightly fused afro, funk, rock, disco and more. Austrian archivists PMG step up with a timely reissue that reminds us just how damn funkee The Funkees were - the jungle bongo of "Salam" and straight-up party jam of "Dance With Me" being particular highlights.
