Straight off the back of a recent Whities performance, Avalon Emerson lands on Matthew Dear's Spectral Sound with four broken, jacked-up techno experiments. The opener "Natural Impasse" has a pouncing, shaking beat structure that is rendered more placid thanks to the playful harmonics gliding above it, whereas "Dystopian Daddy" crafts its trade with a much heavier electro approach - the sort they dig in the Motor City. On the B-side, "Why Does It Hurt" stomps its heavy, menacing bassline over a bed of minimalistic percussion knots, leaving "Groundwater" to provide a more sensible Berlin techno approach for the 4/4 junkies.
