To quote the label themselves, Afro7 Records focus on "new and old music from East Africa", and we can safely say that they have been flooding our charts with absolute gold over the last two years. That recent batch of 12"s have been playing on rotation here at Juno HQ, and this debut album from The Scorpios will surely be growing to hummable levels in the coming weeks. The collective is made up of Sudanese and European talents based in West London, and the most prominent members include Osman Mohammed on percussion, Osman Bobo and Regia Ishag on vocals, Ronnie Maxwell at the bass, and Michael Ofiri on drums; together they've conjured a traditional yet intriguing selection of folk sounds the push the boundaries. This record is a veritable melting pot of sounds, from soul to funk and rock, much like the influences that were spreading across Sudan from the 1960s onwards. This is a gorgeous selection of chanting, kicking-back and deep meditation; excellent and refreshing, much like the rest of the content on this fine new imprint.
