The Manics hold a unique position in the British rock annals, having managed to deliver stadium-sized bombast with an equally big heart for well over 20 years. Yet part of their charm is that they've never allowed themselves to get too comfortable in any one style, and "Futurology" marks another left-turn from this restless yet reliable troupe. Taking influences from krautrock and early '80s pop, and adding an electronic sheen to their gutsy stylings, "Futurology" deviates from the guitar-heavy style of yore. This band show no signs of falling prey to nostalgia or trading on former glories, and this album demonstrates that their generously-sized heart beats as boldly as ever.
