In recent months, saxophonist Rob Mitchell's Abstract Orchestra has been touring the UK with a show based on their interpretations of J Dilla's music. This is the studio version of that show, which happily loses none of the dynamism and rousing brass arrangements that marked out the outfit's touring production. A swathe of Dilla favourites get re-cast as drum break-driven live workouts, with all of the legendary producer's sample choices being re-sung by the Abstract Orchestra's vocalists. It's a formula that works wonderfully well throughout, with the band's additional solos and musical touches only emphasizing the jazz roots of Dilla's instrumental hip-hop productions.
