Jesse Bru's career seemed to spring into life in 2017, helped in no small part by a quintet of hugely impressive releases. He's been pretty quiet so far this year, though Ships In The Night is up there with his strongest previous releases. There's a wonderfully bouncy and rubbery feel about opener "Ships In The Night (017 Rework)", a sample-heavy deep house workout laden with bluesy horns, dreamy flourishes and meandering spoken word vocal snippets, while "In Orbit" smothers a locked-in kick-drum beat with spacey, delay-laden synths and drifting electric piano chords. Also worth checking is "The Promise of Things To Come", a fine fusion of ambient electronics and bustling, layered deep house drums, and the jazzy-but-driving flex of EP closer "Dawn".
