Arc has inaugurated a series of reissues based on some of the great - and in most cases insanely rare - albums nestling in Gilles Peterson's basement. "Musica Infinita" is one of the more outlandish and sort-after sets from legendary Mexican jazzman Tino Contreras. It was first released back in 1978 and has gone on to become a sought-after item with original copies regularly changing hands for several hundred pounds a pop. Listening to this new edition, which interestingly reverses the track listing, it's easy to hear why. The epic A-side suite is particularly potent, with Contreras and company mixing improvised solos with driving big band jazz, spooky build-ups and operatic vocals. There's a kind of free-jazz-goes-jazz-funk feel on the flip, which is a sentence we didn't think we'd be writing today.
