It's impossible to hear Arlo Parks and not feel excited for what the future could hold in terms of this forthright, honest, broken hearted and overwhelmingly reflective young talent. At the same time, it's difficult not to feel slightly disheartened and overwhelmed. Her words aren't pretty, nor particularly hopeful, but by all that may or probably isn't holy, they certainly resonate. One play of this 19-year-old's debut EP is enough to prove the latter. It's easy to write off these odes to melancholy, loss and mortality as angst wrapped in gentile thoughtfulness. But those who have experienced personal challenges will quickly understand her wisdom stretches further than years. From "Angel's Song", where lackadaisical, British youth vocals meet sweet, innocent acoustic guitars, to the soaring pop of "Paperbacks", and the title number's easy groove, it's all poignant enough to make you return.
