The "L.A.M.F." LP was first released by Track Records in 1977. It was poorly mixed and mastered but was still recognized as one of the best albums of the punk rock era.

In 1994, Jungle Records, who by then owned all the master tapes associated with the album, had the tapes of alternate mixes reviewed. The 300-plus available alternate mixes were narrowed down to a shortlist of 50, from which "L.A.M.F. The Lost '77 Mixes" was assembled. The first versions of this release were issued in 1994. This remastered reissue was released in 2017.
