Here's something special: a luscious, far-sighted solo album from Azymuth bassist Alex Malheiros, produced by rising star (and son of Brit-funk/acid jazz legend Bluey) Daniel Maunick. It's a predictably warming, slick and summery affair whose tracks casually - and successfully - join the dots between Azymuth style jazz-funk, samba, Brit-funk, Weather Report and rubbery, sun-soaked deepness. As you'd expect, the musicianship is impeccable (Malheiros' own bass parts are stunning and as fluid as you'd expect), while Maunick's production is polished without being overtly clinical. The result is a hugely enjoyable set that may well become regarded as a contemporary jazz-funk classic.
