Johnny Mbizo Dyani was a South African bassist who shook up the world of jazz and improvised music before his death in 1986. He originally left South Africa in 1964 as a member of The Blue Notes, and such was the void he left on his passing, his band members came together to record a tribute to him, which now stands as a special piece of jazz in its own right. Featuring Dudu Pukwana on soprano and alto saxes, Chris McGregor on piano and Louis Moholo-Moholo on drums, the recordings from 1987 are notable for their lack of bass, leaving the space open where Dyani no doubt would have been wandering up and down the fretboard.
