Cat: STIX 057LP. Rel: 26 Sep 22
Dub
Since first donning the Mato alias in the late noughties, producer and multi-instrumentalist Thomas Blanchot has delivered a string of largely inspired albums featuring radical reggae and dub re-imaginings of everything from classic hip-hop cuts, and Daft Punk's Homework album, to famous classical music pieces and Hollywood movie themes. As the title of his latest LP makes clear, he's now moved on to jazz-funk, soul and disco cuts of the '70s and '80s. Full of authentically dusty reggae rhythms and familiar melodies re-played on instrumentation frequently used by Jamaica's finest, includes some killer instrumental covers, including a sublime take on Kool & The Gang's 'Summer Madness', a seriously jolly and jaunty interpretation of the Meters' 'Cissy Strut' and a Melodica-heavy version of the Isley Brothers' 'Inside You'.
