“The first sound I remember as a little barefoot boy was my daddy’s Martin guitar and a five-string banjo.”

My earliest memories of growing up in Paducah, Kentucky are woven together with the sound of bluegrass and folk music, with my dad on guitar and his good buddies, Scotty Henson on the banjo and Jack Curtis Martin (which is where my middle name came from) on the dobro. I loved that sound and couldn't wait to learn to play the guitar and join in!

By the time I was eight years old, I was playing and singing in church with my dad, Herb Sr., my brother, Herb' Jr., and my mom, Judy. I loved the sound of our voices harmonizing together. The hymns and “Gospel songs" we sang together, filled with theology (even before I had ever heard that word) and truth about God’s grace and love, planted the seeds that would grow and become the “fruit" of so many of the songs I’ve written and recorded over the years.

So, a few years ago, I had the opportunity to record a Bluegrass album called Deep Roots and honor this important part of my story. I loved it so much that I wanted to do it again.

And here you have it...Deeper Roots: Where the Bluegrass Grows! I even wrote a new song by that title to try to capture how this music is such a part of me. I couldn't do this without including my dad and my brother, which I thankfully got to do again. We even recorded a few of the song's; “live", all sitting around a microphone and playing and singing just like we did when we'd gather around our kitchen table and sing together.

These “Deeper Roots" continue to run through my family and I was honored to have two of my favorite singers, my son, Caleb, and my daughter-in-law, Jillian, sing with me. As if that wasn't enough “goodness", I was blessed to have my Bluegrass hero, Ricky Skaggs, sing with me on a new' version of my song Dive...like you’ve never heard it before! And finally, my good friend and incredible singer, Gary LeVox (of Rascal Flatts) joined me on a special song that I wrote with a couple of amazing songwriters, Barry Dean and Lori McKenna.

The real stars of Bluegrass music are the “pickers," and I was so blessed to get to play music with some of the best in the world on this recording. I couldn’t have made this record without the brilliant talent of my friend, Andy Leftwich. His gift is woven all through these songs, and his mandolin solo on Dive will blow your mind! I’m so grateful to all the players and singers who helped me make this music.

While I’m thanking the people who helped make this record happen, I want to thank Mark Mattingly for believing in this project and keeping it moving forward.

Finally, I want to say how grateful I am to Brent Milligan for “gettin’ his Bluegrass on" with me again to make this record. He truly is a musical genius and his talent, his heart, and his friendship have made an indelible mark on my music and my life.
