Kaleidoscope were one of England's best-beloved psychedelic bands, although they're largely unknown outside of the fandom. But their obscurity is no indicator of anything: 'Faintly Blowing' is a deep, emotive and affecting journey with walloping basses, crystal-clear stereo recordings and melodramatic lyrics. Dealing in fairytale and folk stories, there is an otherworldly quality to the album (also cemented by its routine use of synthesizers deployed in unconventional ways, and which dominate many of its mixes), which the band mention form part of the reason for the album's sales flop. Whatever the case, we think it's better suited as a precious rarity than a mega-hit; it lends to the mythological feel.
