DESCRIPTION:  Ken Kesey’s ultra rare 1966 studio recording of the Acid Test with The Grateful Dead. This legendary documentation of the 1965-66 Bay Area Acid Test scene is taken from 14 hours of the actual trip (recorded in a studio). Lots of amazing mind games and word play with Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs in good form, ad libbed poetry, fractured harmonica solos, tape loops and the Grateful Dead lurking in the background. Reproduces the original artwork with liner notes by Ken Babbs and a closing remark from Sound City studio owner Jim Seagrave.

For your further reading enjoyment and enlightenment I offer the following background on the Acid Test scene that I found out there on the astral-plane (aka the Internet); for inquisitors and tripsters alike:

In 1964, Ken Kesey, author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, traveled across America in a tie-dye school bus with nothing but a few friends and enough LSD to get an entire country high. He drove around America challenging people to take his "acid tests" — and thus helped start the entire hippie movement. Strange though it may seem, this was all inspired by the CIA. Kesey had a part of their MKULTRA program, in which the CIA fed LSD and other psychedelics to citizen guinea pigs in order to see what would happen. For Kesey, the experience opened his mind and he wanted to share it with the world. He set out with a group called the Merry Pranksters in order to conduct his acid tests with anyone that he could find. The group included beatniks like Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady, who inspired Jack Kerouac's On The Road. Kesey's house band was the Grateful Dead, then an unknown group called the Warlocks. And his journey was chronicled by author Tom Wolfe, who would immortalize the trip in his book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. These Merry Pranksters threw parties across the country, inviting people to try LSD and “graduate” into what they considered a higher order of thinking. All kinds of people got involved. Artists, musicians, and even members of the Hells Angels flocked out to Ken Kesey’s acid tests both to party and to become, as they would say, "aware." But it was more than just that — it was a happening that changed the world. They passed LSD through the youth and the celebrities of the day and thus helped create a whole new era:  the era of psychedelics, hippies, and rebellion. It was a revolution.

As Merry Prankster Ken Babbs told the BBC, "We won’t blow up their buildings, we’ll blow their minds."

NOTE TO POTENTIAL BUYERS:  If the jacket or disc (unless sealed) is punched, marked, or cut in any manner, denoting a promotional/review copy, I will state that as part of the item description. Also if an issue is a "music club" edition, that will be noted in the item description. (The below information was last updated 10/08/22)

If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. Hopefully, sharing some of this information in my descriptions will help educate and enhance your listening experience.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.
