sleeve - very good - bears record label's promo copy clip mark (see photo) vinyl - very good matrix - A1/B1

A top ten hit in 1992, God's Great Banana Skin revealed an artist at a transition, perhaps even in the midst of an identity crisis.  After kicking off the album with the ambitious and moody "Nothing To Fear", Rea seems content to fill the rest of side one, and all of side two, with generic three-to-five minute rockers, all of which sound efficient and melodic, but lack the passion and commitment of the best cuts on "Road To Hell" (1989) and "Stony Road" (2002), Rea's two best releases.

That said, it's a good listen that hangs together well both thematically and sonically.  It's also one of the hardest Chris Rea albums to find on vinyl, having (to the best of my knowledge) only ever having been pressed once.  That would explain why this is an A1/B1 edition.  The album was released just as CDs were tightening their iron grip on buyers' format preferences, and with Rea's chart popularity beginning to wane, this collection didn't shift enough units to merit subsequent vinyl pressings.
