An original 1st press of Zep II on the UK Atlantic label from 1969. Matrix A2/B2. Please note the label still mentions 'Lemon Song' [and not Killing Floor] and that singles this copy out as a 1st issue [please note there is an earlier label version, but these attributes are generally recognised as '1st press - time of release'. The heavy set vinyl comes housed in an original 1st issue light-brown cover. Anything darker than this will be from, at least, a year later.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) Ok, so this copy is a bit of a conundrum for you! On first inspection I noticed there is a bit of dishing/warping - and was initially quite disappointed..then I played the beast..and changed my mind. So, before we get started please take on board this copy has some dishing - which is pretty much unobservable on side 2 and observable on side 1 [with maximum amplitude of <2mm]. Now, being honest, I would usually 'turn my nose up at the LP' at this point..but then I listened to it. There is absolutely no evidence in the audio of the dishing - I've listened carefully both sides - And I can't detect any remotest sign or issue as a result of it. So, the question for a prospective buyer is.. 'can you live with the cosmetic issue' in order to bag a brilliant player? Because, I kid you not, it plays GREAT. In fact, I am struggling to differentiate it from a NM copy... which go for £150-£200. So, don't necessarily write it off. And this level of performance is guaranteed, or 'your-money-back'. Clearly this copy has seen very light use. Under close inspection we could only make out a couple of very light marks either side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback. Intros and inbetweens are practically silent and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. Again, just to reiterate - I can't give this copy high enough praise. The audio is as good as anything you can practically/realistically find - and it will wipe-the-floor with 9 out of 10 original copies. Slow-builds are really quiet, the audio is very clean, and you can hear all those vocal echoes. We could detect nothing more than a few isolated crackles in a couple of isolated spots. Question is ...can you live with that cosmetic dishing/warping issue which is evident on side 1?
Cover (Ex) Ok, so lets be frank - Zep II, the original copies particularly, are a real bugger to find looking clean. They are so often affected by ageing, wear, marking - that getting a nice clean copy is a difficult task. But this example acquits itself admirably. Lovely clean front with no creasing or marking, perhaps lightest fade creeping in at the spine edge. The rear is usually a mess...but, on this example, there's very little ringwear at all - we're talking two thumbnail creases. Interior is superb - no issues at all. Do expect a bit of edge wear - but it is way lighter than you find on most examples. The text on the spine is pretty much all legible. Overall the cover retains ecellent rigidity. A lovely example by any standard.
