There’s a vibe running through Traveling Circle‘s Escape From Black Cloud that moves them into a denser, at times darker, space. It doesn’t take long for it to wind itself around the band to work with them, rather than putting on a stranglehold. Soaring vocals, a dense bottom-end and buzz-saw guitar give them away off the bat, though it feels they’re still partially under the cloud. Thankfully. The escape plan comes into play when the gauzy haze that colors the record seems to lose center and elevation. That, or Traveling Circle work their way above it. You could call it a pall that permeates the record, but without the oppresive baggage that carries. Kicking off under the Cloud with the great 1-2 punch of Higher and The Candlelight Sway, Traveling Circle set the tone of Cloud ’s journey into the more ominous with the assuredness they showed on their debut, Handmade House. Newborn Shadow quiets it down for one of their smoky slow-burn pulses, calling to mind 60s psych pop without neutering the latent heft of the cut. Green Spider does some similar, though hotter, simmering before Traveling Circle move into deeper space with the vibrating Closer, a cut moving again under the newCloud, but with some familiar footsteps trailing close behind. One set belonging to Willow Tree Fair, another stand-out track that is pure Traveling Circle. Then there’s Rock This Feeling, a downright groovy and sexy nugget that uses their arsenal to full effect for a tune that sounds both like a soulful culmination and a new orientation. Fountains of  Time enters in with some tribal cadence that insinuates itself through the cut, working in lock-step with their sinewy groove. Conduit Closing retains some of that drum character for a subtle escalation that finds form in soft edges without burnishing off any of their confectionary grind and hum.  It’s a curious cut that finds more shape with repeated listenings, though never fully giving itself over to a hard edge. Closer Tears of the Soul brings Cloud, and Traveling Circle full circle—as it should—languidly collapsing the new sounds into a coda for album and band so far. Every bit a worthy successor to the promise and delivery of Handmade House, as well as a stellar addition that’s roomy, welcoming and built on that record’s rock solid foundation. It may be hard to put your finger exactly on what makes Escape From Black Cloud’ sethos new for Traveling Circle, but it remains easy enough to find the pulse. (mratavist.wordpress.com)

As we draw closer to the precipice of 2012 and prepare for the moment of transformation, the highly-anticipated second album from Traveling Circle has arrived just in time for the ceremonious shifting of the cosmic dial. Escape From Black Cloud is an alchemy of disparate musical ingredients that will awaken your senses, clear the dormant catacombs of your mind and spin-cycle your neural fabric. It moves through the islets of Orion's Belt, traverses the Zodiac Diagram and turns the Pythagorean Theory on its head, celebrating uncharted sonic dimensions. The universe is Traveling Circle's kitchen and something celestial has been brewing. Don't miss this transcendental feast. (Nasoni)
