Morgul Blade is a relatively new band out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and with their debut album Fell Sorcery Abounds is making their presence known in the field of epic metal in no uncertain terms. Greece’s No Remorse Records has a great track record with this type of music and Morgul Blade is another notch in their belt. Fell Sorcery Abounds is rife with tasty guitar work and a variety of echo-enhanced vocals that give the album both a sense of immediacy and atmosphere at the same time. The harsh, blackened singing on "He Who Sits Upon the Back Throne/The Morgul Blade" (Tolkien, anyone?) and "A Last Waltz of Gevauden" combined with the huge riffs make for a sound akin to Bathory while the acoustic guitars and clean singing on "Oak in the Mist" reminded me a little of Atlantean Kodex. It isn’t all awesome as some of the clean singing on tracks like "Sons of the Night" is OK, neither detracting from the song nor pushing it forward, but despite the fact that I found the entire album a driving, fist-in-the-air experience every time I listened (a lot, suffice it to say). I’m not saying Morgul Blade sounds exactly like any of these bands, but if you enjoy Manilla Road, early Manowar, Bathory, Atlantean Kodex and other epic metal bands in that vein, you need to find yourself a copy of Fell Sorcery Abounds.
