Conductor Peter Maag and the London Symphony Orchestra laid down a highly enjoyable version of the incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, along with sopranos Jennifer Vyvyan and Marion Lowe, and the Chorus of Royal Opera House. Right from the opening bars of the Overture, which Mendelssohn wrote when he was 17, on through the closing notes, written 16 years later at the bequest of King Fredrick William IV for a performance of the play in Potsdam, Maag walked the fine line between the tension and joyfulness that infused Shakespeare’s comedy. Maag also seamlessly blended the two sections, giving no indication that they were written so far apart.

'London Stereo' recordings of the mid-1960's  (affectionately known among the collectors as 'bluebacks' for their distinct pale blue back covers) were 'London' record's audiophile response to such analogue, audiophile masterpieces of the late 50's and early 60's , such as RCA's 'Living Stereo' or Mercury's 'Living Presence'. One look (literally speaking) at the grooves of these records and you will immediately realize that these are not your ordinary recordings: the sheen on the surface of the record is intense, the grooves are full and well defined and the London records did not waste their time pressing the records on an inferior vinyl: this is a solid, almost half-a pound slab of hi-grade, low carbon vinyl that in this day and age would have been called 'virgin' vinyl. These recordings - mostly classical, but also some easy listening, soundtrack and original cast - were made under the supervision of the most knowledgeable technicians and engineers on earth. 'London' after all, was an affiliate of Decca records, which for many years was a pioneer in the record-making business.

·      CONDITION:

·      RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is STILL in its original poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)         This is the original flat edge pressing

(f)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the resolution more precise and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music.

(g)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·      COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-       Cover has a sticker residue (partially peeled remnants of the price sticker or some other sticker; the buyer can probably remove these small, still affixed bits and pieces of the sticker with a minor effort)

-       Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-       Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-       Cover has two corners slightly worn

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-       Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.  (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-       Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
