During the first year or so of the British invasion The Dave Clark 5 were considered to be legitimate rivals for the Beatles. That seems a bit silly now, as they faded fast, and left a musical legacy that is dwarfed by that of The Fab Four. Still, they should be given credit where credit is due.

 

They operated in a time period where lps were still considered an afterthought, basically a way to capitalize on hit singles. I have heard a few of the many albums they cranked out and none amounted to much, in my opinion. The Dave Clark 5 was a singles band, and what they gave us was a series of chart hits, the best of which are collected here. Most of these are originals, and they have good melodies and are performed with an infectious enthusiasm. DC5 had a nice vocal sound and a propulsive instrumental backing. These are quality efforts, and great fun besides.

 

My favorites are "Glad All Over", "Catch Us if You Can", and the beautiful ballad, "Because". All the tracks are excellent though, and my only complaint is that a couple more could have been added. This might be all you need by this group, although More Greatest Hits might be worthwhile. Get it in mono if you can.

This is a fine early collection of the DC5's biggest hits. The covers of Chris Kenner and the Contours are eminently forgettable, but their original songs are solid British invasion pop. "Catch Us If You Can" remains their crowning moment.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)         The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

 

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(d)         Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

 

(e)         True stereo version of this album do not exist.

 

(f)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·      THE COVER

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

 

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

 

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

 

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

 

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the bottom seam   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
